Anyone Morel Mushroom Hunt???
haha, we found the first around here april 2. i don't know how this cold snap will affect them. i have found them in the snow before. really don't care for the blacks, i usually wait for the yellows
What's sad is I just don't like eating them that much. It's like a little treasure hunt to me
The family and friends sure like them.
I cut them in 1/2, let them soak in salt water for a couple days, roll them in flour, and fry them up.
The smaller ones I usually sautée in butter and beer. The hubby likes them in eggs.

I hunt north of grand rapids mich. and do fairly well. But my best spot is in Rogers AR. Secret of course. (hint: golf course east of town) there I get some of the largest i have ever seen

They literally come here in droves to pick mushrooms, they grow in the fresh burned areas. I have seen school busses converted to processers with driers and vacuum packers set up in side. and buyers will set up in the neighboring areas.
I was banned per my own request for speaking the name Pelosi

They'll run $40 and up a pound here. Still waiting to thaw out right now. I only found a dozen last year, but one was the size of my fist. Wasn't as good to eat as the little ones though.
I've never been too hot at finding morels, but i do get chantrelles every fall on my land. I also am growing some shiitakes on alder logs.
When I lived in northern California, there were lots of chantrelles, including the little black ones, hedgehogs, oysters, and matsutakes.

I'd love to go up north and hunt sometime, or those fresh burned areas like AkTallPaul mentioned. I've always heard that was AWESOME.
