My girlfriend is looking at a '06 GMC Envoy Denali the dealership and odometer is stating that it has 5,610 miles.I had her run a Carfax report on it and it comes back with 14,239 miles on 8-24-07.The dealership is in northern IL. and the Denali was purchased from another dealership Fox Auto Nation in Maryland.

The salesman swears the mileage is correct but it has me a little concerned.Is there any other computer on the vehicle that records miles that the odometer does not show that could be read with a dealers scan type tool.

 

I can't say for sure on a GM product but all the late Dodge stuff has it in the pcm.It would not suprise me if they all do

I was thinking the same thing but if someone rolls back the odometer will the pcm change allso.

This is what I found on Edmunds about rollbacks-
Using a laptop computer and a program downloaded from the Internet, it's easy to set back the mileage. People wanting to avoid over-mileage penalties on a lease return sometimes turn back the odometer

May just have to do it the old-fashioned way. Measure the tread wear and compare against another with the same mileage and also look at where you fill it with fuel. Break pedal will also give it away. If it was only 5k miles it should be almost new. More wear the more mileage. Just some thoughts.

 

Not too sure on automobiles , but on heavy trucks , two minutes with a laptop , and the right software , and you can make the odometer read whatever you want it to , but the correct mileage will ALWAYS be stored in the ECM.

 

I know that was a problem around here a few years back when the dealers were importing Canadian vehicles. They needed to get the speedo and gauges switched to US measure and the dealers wouldn't warrant anything with a modified speedo, even though they were supposed to be done by a federal weights and measures contractor. There should also be a document signed by the last owner that says the vehicle mileage is correctly rep'd on the vehicle. I guess an 06 w 5K on it isn't that strange but I'd look at other items like the pedals and brakes and see if you can get a dealer to scan the ecm for the real miles. Kurt

 

run the license plate to find the origianal owner and ask them how many miles
