Any sporting clays shooters out there?

The National Sporting Clays Championships are coming up in September in San Antonio Tx. Just wondering if there were any members here that attended this event? Maybe I will see some of you there.

Have yet to shoot sporting clays, but I shoot trap every week. I have heard the sporting clays is like crack, one hit and you are hooked!! Hope to make it to a sporting course before summer is over. I see you are a Beretta man, I choose Browning myself. Have fun and enjoy the Nationals.

I shoot every chance I get...and I'm pretty good at it...but not good enough to compete with the pros. It's a lot of fun though.

Sporting clays are fun, they try to simulate hunting scenarios mainly, have a bunch of quail fly up nearby and fly through the woods, you have to hit them. Or they fly over a pond like ducks, roll past you like a rabbit, some go straight up like a teal, etc. Fun game, there's usually 50 shots a round. Every course is different. I like the dove tower, they have a wobble trap in the top of a 40' tower, you can get as close or as far as you want. That's my favorite station. I'd like to see them throw a deer target in there, like you're on a deer drive. Shoot it with buckshot, now that's what I'm talkin about. Or you could sit up in a tree stand and it could roll by underneath.

Hoss,

I see you live in Georgetown. I work in Austin and I shoot at Capitol City Trap and Skeet every Wednesday and I also shoot all of their tournaments. If you have ever been there I probably have seen you. Come out and join us sometime if you like.

Skeet targets will alway remain the same no matter where you go to shoot( at least they are suppose to). In sporting clays, you never know what you are going to see. Some go straight up in the air, some are made to roll across the ground etc. The rules allow you to vary the targets however you want as long as they are visible and safe. They also use targets called mini's which are very small targets( 60mm vs 104-110mm) and midi's( 90mm). There are also some called battues which are the same size as a regular target but are nearly flat like a pancake.

I like the game better because it is not as repetitive as skeet.

Sporting clays are VERY humbling! I can consistently hit 23 or 24 out of 25
when shooting trap, but the best I've ever done at sporting clays is 35 out of
50. Maybe it's because I'm using a Nova pump, instead of an O/U or a semi,
but I just can't get any better than 35!!

Gumby,

You are right about it being humbling. Its tough to compete with the guys who shoot everyday. It usually takes shooting 90% or better to win. I have seen some guys really make a pump work but for the most part they are a little bit of a handicap when you have to shoot targets that require quick shooting. There are shoots out there just for pump guns. I will be shooting in the pump gun event at nationals this year in addition to the main event.

All I can say is keep shooting and the scores will come up.
