Any banjo pickers here?

I'm just starting out. Seems like fun so far. Who else plays?

I actually have a couple friends with banjos, one is very good, he plays guitar, sitar, bass, and banjo, also harmonica. A buddy of mine I know from here has a banjo, though I dont know how well he plays it.

I myself am horrible at stringed instruments.

If they actually know how one should be picked, whether it be "claw-hammer" style, finger-pickin', or some other style, they will call it a "five-string" and not a banjo.

I have a five string and play a little. I mostly play guitar and harp, but I pick a little and have some fun. It is a great sound...gets the neighbors a little curious though

I have had a banjo since I was 7 and I have never been able to find someone for instruction. I have spent lots of time with other instruments, but I have spent most of my service time in Michigan and I don't think there are very many hillbillies up here. Just about a week ago, I bought a new set of strings for it for some reason.

I'd like to learn clawhammer style banjer...heard ol' Stringbean on WSM 650 AM Classic Opry show the other night, he plays real fast & I'd say his set was right at 1 minute on that 1962 Porter Waggoner segment.

I'm trying to learn the Scruggs bluegrass style. I can't seem to find any teachers around here. It seems a lot of banjo guys teach themselves out of books and DVDs. That's what I'm doing, but I sure think a proper instructor would help me progress much faster.

It has been my observation that alcohol is a good string lubricant; the more you drink, the better you pick. <<<pretend it is a five-string.

Although I don't play banjo (I'm a guitar picker myself), I'd like to give it a try some day, looks like fun and I like the sound. Try looking around the local music shops and ask about lessons. Thats where I go for my guitar lessons.

Also shovelhead's pic made me burst out laughing, thats a gooder .
