Makes them talk with a lisp and jack their jaw around like they got Tourettes Syndrom . I can't tell you how many that I have confiscated and promptly thrown over the side of the ship (mostly tongue studs ... very few sailors ).

..... now as for me, oh yeah ... there are a few tattoos here and there. Some would make your mom blush. Got a couple more to get before I git !!!

Following family tradition, my son joined the Navy in 1999. He's an AG E-5. He did his tattoos in Biloxi and Okinawa. No tongue piercing for him, his grandpa and uncles would have kicked his butt.

Did any of you guys know Chief Gordon Crawford?

Flashdancer,

I know a few Chief Crawfords ... where is he stationed what does he do ?

Your son looks like he's doing pretty good in the AG rate !! Tell him to look for orders to Key West ... they LOVE "weather guessers" down there twice a year ... Dolphin Fishing Season and Hurricane Season

Shortround was the guy trying to perfect the submarine screendoor ... after close review, they decided it was probably safer to let him play with missiles instead .

Noticed on today's news that they played "Anchors Aweigh" to wake the astronuauts this morning.

I guess it beats waking up to David Bowie's "Major Tom"

... when I was a recruiter, there was an irrate mom who called our C.O. in such a fluster because she got a letter from her son that said that he was "getting beat and mashed in the head". She wanted him home NOW and someone's head better roll for this.

Mom felt kinda silly when the Capn' calmly explained to her that since it gets so un-godly cold in Great Lakes where her son was attending bootcamp, that when they do a lot of physical training (getting beat or mashed) they often times have to do it inside the barracks for the safety and health of the sailors. The only place where there is enough room for 30 - 40 men to do this is in the community shower room in the bathroom (the head).

"Your son is fine and it looks like he has a firm grasp on Navy terminology, maam".

My uncle retired in 1977 so that may have been before your time. He was a MCPON AB. I think he started out as ABH. He was on many aircraft carriers. Got his butt caught in the wing of a jet when if folded. Took quite a while to get him out as they could not start the plane up again for a period of time. That had to leave a mark! He was Sailor of the Year also, can’t recall what year. He did some recruiting too.

My “Liar” is stationed in Hawaii. Poor baby! I believe he will make a career out of it, be a fool not too. My uncle likes saluting his mailbox.
When we travel or are in a Hurricane area my son calls and “briefs” me. It’s nice to have your own personal weatherman.

If I got my butt caught in the wing of a jet, I believe I would have left a "mark" on the jet.

Geico, brig time????? I've got the "Good Conduct" metals to indicate my outstanding behavior. Besides, there ain't many of you that would remember a place called LBJ. Top would. I spent a year there one week with my CO.
Top, remember Na Trang when an individual came up missing? Seems he worked for the other guys. Lots of stink for a long time afterwards from that incident. MACV was so good to work with. Glad we took our orders straight out of Pearl.

Shortround out
SR, Why do you think it surprised me?

On an unrelated subject, a’nt it just like a civilian to start something then go out of town.

My respects to all of you that have/ are served.

We went in "96' and would like to go back. He'll be there another 2 years so we have time. My daughter, grandaughter, and son-in-law went to see him last month. They all meet on Maui for a week had a ball.

Ahhhhh ... Maui .... I have fond memories of sleeping-one-off on the Lahaina pier after missing the liberty boat back to my ship ... several times .

I love watching the whales play between the islands off the coast of Maui. They are so curious and will come nudge up against your boat. We had a young whale (about 35 ft) come scratch it's back on the barnacles on the side of the ship. Sat and watched it for a good half hour ... good times.
