All this trash talking
All this trash talking
It's a given that being a cummins board there is lots of trash talking about ford and the general. I'm curious as to what, exactly makes their diesels junk?
I've heard the Duramax has head problems and the Powerstroke is a massive motor w/o much power for its size. What else makes them junk?
and 'it's a chevy/ford' isn't reason enough.

For starters, they are V-8's. They just aren't built as massively as the Cummins. I think the old Powerstroke was a good pickup truck engine, but the 6.0 liter has been plagued with a multitude of problems (leaks, bad injectors, head gasket failures, stalling out for no good reason, etc, etc.). The Duramax has had its share of fuel injector and head gasket problems as well. I would not call the current crop of Duramaxes "junk", but I think the 6.0 Powerstroke is.

The 7.3 was changed/replaced because of emissions. The people from ford that i have talked to said that in 07 there will be a change in emissinons and they knew the 7.3 wouldn't make the cut so they droped it!
It was a good motor, I am not sure why they didn't just adapt it to pass the new emissions.

Take a look on their boards .......... class action lawsuits for overheating ,stalling etc.... !!! Make your own opinion ,everyone has one ...........personally I could care less if someone bought a Yugo
.......... your $$$$ buy what you prefer . New engines with less than 5 years on the market and another Duramax........ not anybodys guinea pig on my dime !!!!

I talked to my bro in law Friday, who is mechanic for a local Ford dealer. He told me the 6.0 is a pos. He said rumor has it that Ford is dropping Navistar in about 07, and are building their own engine. Don't know, but thats what he said.
My dad has 350K+ on his 7.3L PowerJoke. He is a maintenance fanatic and has only had an algae problem in his fuel system. He picked up some really garbage fuel enroute to Ohio one year and it ended up causing him to replace the entire fuel system. Other than that the truck is still like new. He retired at 38 and has more time than he knows what to do with. Hmm, must be nice.... go to school until you're 18, work almost another 18 years and spend the rest of your life travelling our beautiful country! My target is 42-45, but I still have at least 15 years to get there
Seriuously though. Ford put the 6.0 out so that they could get the loyal followers to cover the development costs to comply with the newer emissions regulations. If they were smart they would have left the 7.3L alone and used the proceeds from the sale of trucks with those engines for the R & D on the 6.0. They're trying to squeeze more out of less.
Something that doesn't get brought up too much in the brand wars is displacement. I think this is simply because the Cummins is so powerful that "any" diesel pickup is considered apples to apples when in reality that's not the case. If it were a gasser war who do you think would win the 360ci or the 445ci? What about the 360ci and the 402ci? In gasser wars 50ci is huge!!!

U want trash talk bout a dodge?
there is another site that hosts nothing but international diesels that does not like our engines... the cummins is already proven, goes back many years, duramax and 6.DOH as i call it, are still new and too many issues to solve easily..

My uncle works at a Chevy dealer. He was gtaking a BRAND NEW Chevy w/ Duramax in it to another dealership about 60 miles away. Half way there, it made a bang and the oil pressure dropped to 0. He pulls over, shuts it off, gets out and finds a 30 foot trail of oil on the highway behind him. He looks under the truck, only to find a portion of the rod sticking through the oil pan.
Now, what would you rather own?

I don't know if you visit any other sites like this for ANY other product (not only vehicles) but I think there is ALOT less trash talking here than anywhere else. I think it's one of the things that makes this site soooo good.
I hate reading on the other sites over and over and over how the other brand is crap just because it is the other brand.

The GM 6.2L was a good motor for a half-ton pickup that was only used for highway cruising. The Oldsmobile 5.7L diesel made a great gasser performance engine block if you changed the crank and heads.
The IH 6.9L was a good motor as well although not the power that the 7.3L had. One problem with all of them is GLOWPLUGS. Sure is nice not to need them.
None of them would fire off as fast as the Cummins.
Seriously, there are good points and bad points to every brand. Some of the members here are Mopar fanatics. Others are here only because of the Cummins. Many or most will give you a reasonably objective opinion of other brands. Most of us are here because we bought the best that we could afford and that ended up being a Cummins.
