Airless paint sprayer advice?
Airless paint sprayer advice?
I'm getting ready to paint the house, and am kicking around buying an airless sprayer...
Basically, I want one that sucks from a 5 gal bucket that will work well and last long enough to be a better investment than renting.
On the other hand I don't want to drop big $$$ like a buddy of mine did on a commercial quality one, since it would only get used every few years.
Anyway, I've been eyeballing one of the Wagner XT290's that go for about $400 new, or three something for a reconditioned one on the internet...
Anybody have any experience with these? Or have another one they would suggest?
I don't want to get something that doesn't have enough power to make a good spray or something that breaks down, but I don't want to spend more than I have to...

i have used the a smaller wagner that is roughly a 2-3 gal pale on top of it. it works nice and is easy to use the only downside is the cleanup. it takes a good 15-20 to clean everything. really quick to get goin and does a nice job while spraying and costs $200 with a spray nozzle and rooler attachment.

Thanks for the reply.
I saw the smaller one with the hopper on the top, but kind of figured it would take longer to clean up, and it would just be handier to have something that would draw from the 5 gal paint can.
Good to know that it paints well, and that you apparently haven't had any problems with it.
As you go bigger they have a XT250, the 290, and a 330... The 250 is on little feet with a suction hose, and the bigger ones have a collapsable cart with a bucket holder. The 330 has a bit more power, longer hose, and can handle one size bigger tip, but I think the 290 might work since all I'll likely spray through it is latex.
Actually for the difference in price maybe the one with the hopper on top is the way to go...

My experience has been with the little wagner hand helds (don't waste money) and the larger rental units w/ electronic pressure control. I really like that one...Returned t and asked the parts guy...$1500. Oh, well, I guess I just rent it every 10 years. Can't justify it!

Go to Homer and buy a Graco..
I did industrial coating's with my industrial unit...I can still buy parts for it. It is over 20 yrs old and still works like a champ..
I sprayed zinc, poly's, epoxies and a few other things I'm glad I'm not around anymore... (No industrial coaters in the old folks home..)
Be sure to read that manual and follow the safety precautions..3000 PSI can cause injection injuries......if your lucky - you only loose an arm...

why not just borrow your buddy's? as for the little wagners, the ones i have used were pretty junky. seemed to clog up/shoot "clumps" of paint, i think it wasted paint due to this, was a pain to clean, etc. these were were old ones that were probably worn out when my old boss got them, so.... maybe the newer ones are nicer?
Thanks for the replies...
I know I don't want a little hand held Wagner. If anything I'd get a stand type that draws from a 5 gal bucket. I just don't know if these mid-sized Wagner Titan's are worth owning since I've never run one (are they actually a Titan pump?).
It appears pump assemblies and other parts are readily available, and it has some features I like: Collapsable stand, standard size filter in the spray gun, screen screws off suction hose to accept garden hose for cleaning, reversable tip...
Anyhow, I'd love to have a Graco or Hero or other commercial rig, but I'll only be spraying latex, so I assume something like .30 gpm pump and about a .015 tip would be as much as I need?
With Graco, is the 390 the smallest that accepts a 5 gal bucket? At .47gpm and $700 it would be more than I need.
Anyway, maybe I'll rent again, but I hate being at the mercy of the weather and rental time table.

I have a Campbell Hausfeld airless sprayer I bought at Home Depot about three years ago that works great. It came with a 50' hose and I bought a few extra nozzles and I think I paid about $400 for everything. I have used it three times and it is worth every penny I paid for it.
By way of update, I went ahead and got the Titan/Wagner at Home Depot. It has a 3 year warranty and would only have to run a few days to pay for it's self vs rental fees, as long as it sprays well. I figured if it didn't work well when new, I could just return it.
Anyhow, although the cart doesn't seem like it would hold up to rough daily use like the ones over a thousand dollars, it runs well and sprays a nice fan.
I think as long as I treat it well and keep some preservative stuff it in when it's in storage, it should turn out to be a good investment for an infrequent user like me.
Thanks for the replies.
