yes they can. the ones on our trucks are not likely to have enough output volume to be really effective at filling an air tank of more than a gallon or so......

the larger A/C compressors can handle the task no problem. I know a couple guys that have done that with no problems. with onboard air for running ARB lockers, airing up tires....etc

you could probably even get a compressor from a big truck, weld up some mounts to fit. Then put the proper pulley on it. You could decrease the pulley size for more CFM or increase it for less.

The trouble would be limited space and if the pump could tolerate running sideways or upside down with lubrication etc.

are not ac pumps lubricated by the oil in the freon? don't think they would last long dry.

see if you can find a "YORK" A/C compressor. They use oil instead of refrigerant for lubrication, there cheap and bulletproof as long as you mount it vertical. I know Volvo used them in the 70's. I'll see if I can dig up some more info on it.

chris, have a look at this to get you started:

A simple internet search can bring up lots of info. I believe a company called Kilby Enterprises will sell you just the brackets for the compressor but dont quote me on that.

They are lubricated buy oil added to the refrigerant, the oil is and stays separate from the R134a. When you evacuate an A/C system the oil is drawn out too and dropped into a separate bottle.

vehicles use R134a or (now outlawed) R12.......duracool can replace R12, or have the system refitted to run R134a.

i have a a/c pump working the full airride suspension in my dakota show truck. it fills a 9 gallon tank from empty to 175psi in about 4 minutes on idle, faster if you rev the motor up. the company reworks the insides of them. they come with an oiler on the intake and a water/oil seperator on the exaust line going to the tank. i have been running it in my dakota for 5 years now with no issues at all. at it works alot to when i play with the airride. somtimes running for 10 minutes straight, lol. i believe the company even makes a bracket for the cummins. might be worth checkin out.

well, it really depends on what you want the air for...an AC compressor will put out LOTS of air compared to an electric
