Aftermarket Navi units: which to stay AWAY from

The Pioneer AVIC-D3 is unbearable....

AVIC Forum

it will NOT reroute you if you take another road to avoid delays, it constantly tells you to U turn and get back where it wants you.

you HAVE to have the Map DVD in at ALL times if you want to use it.
you can't even get into a few menus without the MAP in.

what is really CRAPPY is this:
--you can burn a data CD with MP3's (i have ~150 songs on one)
--you can burn a data DVD with MP3's (over 1000 songs on one)

but you can't LISTEN to them, because you have to keep taking the disc out.

and the GUI is a HUGE PITA, it is just HORRIBLE. you can turn on "shuffle CD"
from the CD menu, but to turn it off, you have to go back 3 menus

and it has no OFF button or MUTE button. you have change menus to turn it off, hold the Volume button in like 5 seconds, or turn it down (the volume is SLOOOOOOOOW)

i like it, i REALLY love it, but it has such annoying idiosyncrasies, it drives me nuts. if it was a JENSEN or Audiovox or some really cheap chinese brand, or just really dang cheap, OK, i got what i paid for.

i did not realize Pioneer would put such a non-intuitive product on the market.

I just put a Kenwood DNX7100 in my wifes 4Runner and it's awesome. I shyed away from the AVIC because a brand new AVIC-Z3 unit on the showroom floor of Al & Ed's here in SoCal couldn't find my house, which I've been living in now for the past 5 years. Also heard of crashing issues and overheating. Made my decision much easier. The Kenwood nav is Garmin and is the best in the business.

I had a avic-n2, worked good til the warranty went out, then had a black screen and a broke flap-motor. Sent it off (complaining to the warranty about the perfect timing) and they agreed to cover 75% of the costs. Got it back, 6 months later another broke motor. Very good equalizer, had a mute and navigation did good except for re-routing the same route every time I wanted a detour. Then it was stolen. Now I have a avic-n4. Navigation is better, better looks, doesn't have a mute, but has a big pause/play button on the touchscreen. The main thing I like about it is the touchscreen and how much bigger the buttons are, and that the right **** was replaced for 2 buttons. I am pleased with it.
