AAA Members

I just received an offer in the mail to join the AAA club. I'm not that interested in the roadside service, which I hear really sucks. My RV insurance covers that as well as my 7 year/100k Maximum Care warranty from Chrysler.

What I want to know is, are the "other" benefits worth it? Discounts on hotels, motels, etc... Do you get alot better insurance rate if you are a member? Stuff like that.

So let me hear your thoughts and stories about AAA, so that you can make up my mind. ;D All responses are appreciated! Thanks for your time!

Tony

Re:AAA Members

Yup, I'll confirm the road service is quite slow, and too rigid.

When they can't reach their tow clients, they will call us for a local wrecker service instead, the customer's many times have waited a couple hours. I'm sure they only call us when the customer has become irate.

Re:AAA Members

I can't complain at all about AAA. Roadside service has always been quick. My step daughter used it so much, she went over her allotted service calls every year for three years.

Other services that are great are the DMV services, no lines and no appointments needed.
Re:AAA Members

With the Lenscrafters discount, every time I get glasses I save the cost of the membership ;D You might also save money with their insurance, but that's a weird little racket, so it's hard to say for sure. I've looked into changing, but no one seems to be able to beat them for me. They used to be a good way to arrange good financing for car loans, although with manufacturers falling all over themselves to offer rebates and especially 0% loans I doubt there's any advantage there any more. They also sell extended warranties cheaper than manufacturers or the dealers.

Re:AAA Members

I use them for maps. I can get a Triptik map point to point sent to my house when I order it on line. No driving to the AAA office. Much more accurate than Mapquest, but slower.

I've used their towing service a few times. It's not speedy. If I'm a member and I'm riding in someone else's car, I'm covered. We can call AAA for help. They will bring you parts if you ask for them instead of a tow.

The discounts aren't bad at hotels, motels and such. I've never used the insurance.

Jean

Re:AAA Members

I got a membership in the AAA for the convenience of the DMV transfers etc. I have found their map services to be helpful and though I am not a coupon clipper I have used their discounts at hotels and amusement parks to more than pay for the annual costs. Fortunately I have not had the need to call for service so I can’t say if it is good or bad.

Re:AAA Members

Tony I have been a member of AAA since 84 and not had any problems with road service or insurance. My wife and I have both our trucks and our home through AAA with a Credit union discount. I have no complaints at all!

KC

Re:AAA Members

I have been a member since 85. Used towing service many times. Funny thing though, always broke down at the house! Used to have AAA auto ins, but have since changed. Have used the Trip Kit-and discounts at motels. About the same as AARP. Boy it hurts to say AARP!!! I guess that is a different thread.
Thanks
Smokin J

Re:AAA Members

I'm sure most of you are smart enough not tobe out in this weather we're experiencing, but AAA is the wrong answer when it's like this. They only allow a contracted tow company in a given area. If that company is busy, you wait. They don't send the closest available. We've cancelled a number of AAA requests this weekend because of long waits. I'll tell you this, if you wind up in a hazardous situation (blocking traffic, etc.), and the AAA wait is any longer than any other service, they will not get called, you can settle with them later, if you are persuasive enough with them. Sorry, but it's the truth. I'm sure the service is just fine when the weather is nice.

Re:AAA Members

They told us to get somebody else. 1-2 hours in a blizzard was plenty I guess.
