Iam having a hard time troubleshooting this foreign EDIT. I have 12vts to the ignitor 12 vts to the distributor and no spark??? Is there a way to test the ignitor or distributor for output juice? is there a common failure part that I should just replace other than the whole car??

 

Chrck for voltage to the coil. Then check the secondary side of the coil for spark. If you get a spark from the coil you know that you have a defective distributor cap or rotor. If theres still no spark change the coil to cap wire. ( assuming you have voltage to the coil but no spark through the lead). You may also just have a bad ignitor.

 

I can answer this on a general basis.
First, what do you mean by the ignitor? Could you mean the coil? You can do a quick check on the coil by removing one wire and checking the coil for continuity across the two 12 volt connectors. Also do a continuity check between the high voltage (coil wire) and the coil case. This coil test is for the average coil, but some may be a bit different on the HV side.
Is there any spark at all or just a very weak yellow spark? A weak yellow spark means various things, but a bad capacitor will also casue that.
How much gap is there between the disstributor rotor and the pickup?
Does this car have an ignition module?
How did you check for spark? At a plug wire or the coil wire?
Answer these questions and we will go from there.

 

I have no idea where the coil is? The ignitor is a little box on the firewall with a big plug on it no in or out labeled it all goes into a big harness. It is tied into the ignition system somehow just not sure where.. There isnt a coil like on standard V8s.

 

The coil should be on the distributor.

 

I checked for spark at a plug wire.. There is no spark at all.. I have not found a actual ignition module. I feel like this--------------> If this was like any older style stuff it would be game on but this crap is goofy..

 

There is nothing on the distributor. Could be in it but the cover under the rotor say do not remove and I cant get it off anyways.. I tried...

 

Taking a wild guess, each spark plug may have it's own coil. Have you tried tracing the plug wire from the spark plug? If each plug has its own coil then it is not a coil problem. I suspect the module. Let us know where the HT wire goes to.

 

Another thing you can try is to log into a Celica forum. Bet those guys will give you all the help you need pronto.

 

All the plug wires go to a standard looking cap. No individual coils..

 

This may sound like a stupid question, but where does the center wire on the distributer cap go to? That must go to a coil of some sort?

 

Do you have a digital camera? If you do take a pic of the distributer with the cap off and send it to me so I can see what you have. The toyotas I have worked on have the coil under the cap. I have a 92 corolla so it should be similar. I have the manual on the corolla but they may have different engines. You may want to try to pull diagnostic codes too. May give you an idea.

 

Ok! According to All-Data the coil is located in the (L) rear of engine compartment. The coil gets it's signal from the ignitor which sits above the brake booster, which gets its signal from the ECU. I have the specs for measuring the resistance of the coil/coils. There is a primary coil and a secondary coil which looks like its 1 unit. It would be very helpful to know what engine you have in the Toyota, 1.6L, 2.0L, or the 2.2L. I have access to All-data if you need any diagram or specs.
