You won't be going for distance and won't have a lot of time to "aim" so the barrel length shouldn't be a problem. Now, if you were going for more than 20 feet with accuracy in mind then you may want to go with at least a 4" barrel and longer the better. You will be shooting at distances less than 20 feet with a point and shoot like mad until the carnage is over so barrel length shouldn't matter in my opinion.
I still would consider the Judge. I looked at the store that usually do business with here locally and they have about 10 of them ranging in price from $425 to $460 for the new 3" chambered guns. Barrel lengths vary from 2.5" to 6". They sell alot of them for grizzly protection around here.

if i were you i'd go with the ruger super red hawk .454 Casual or a similar model but most definatley that round. i have a friend whos step mother used to fly for the canadian air force. they issued her a 454 casual because it can take down a polar bear if they should go down on their northern routes... if it can take down a polar bear it will have no problems with any other bear.

I wouldn't trust the judge for more than a car jacking....But what ever you get and no matter how big you better practice with it cause its a little hairy with a 1200 pound griz foaming at the mouth so close the slobber is slung on you as he shakes his head....I have been there, and it still scares me to this day when I get real close to one...
YOIKS!!! That thing looks like a locomotive with a pistol grip! You really can't tell how huge the gun is until you notice how small the trigger and guard look.
It can't be very convenient; "bang!", go find the gun, "bang!", go find the gun, etc.

I got to look at the judge and alaskan today at sportsmans. I like the feel of the alaskan, too bad they didn't have the .454.

..After it bounced off his head I don't think he was in any condition to shoot it again let alone pick it up...
