220 extension cord

Do they make a 220 extension cord? I got a new welder with a 220 plug. The problem is the outlet is on the wrong side of the shop.

Thanks!

You can just make one out of 8-3 romex if you want to. That's what I did and I've used it for years.

You CAN buy one, but it's cheaper to make one. I did that in my shop back east, for that reason.

It's only gonna be cheaper if you have some wire layin' around...

Don't go out and buy a whole roll of wire, just to make an extension cord, though...

I bought the length I needed for around $110. The premade cord was $149.95 and wasn't quite long enough. It would have worked, but there was a corner of the shop it still wouldn't reach.

Yeah, if he's got access to a wholesale electric company, or can find someone else who has some wire to make cord with...

then got the ends you need...

it's definitley gonna be cheaper.

Extension cord cable

If you are going to buy or "thrift" cable for an extension cord, use some SO cable. It is meant for applications like that and although it is a little more expensive, it will hold up a lot better than Romex style cable. It will also be easier to roll up and store.

I made mine out of exterior grade Romex. I also made up a set of long leads with #2 cable. Use the heavier sized Romex as stated.

I had an extension cord for mine, about 10ft. Then went out and now I have over 100 feet of welding cable. If that ain't enough I'll just pull the truck to where I need it and fire up the lincoln.

Now if you don't have a stick welder and pull the trigger then making an extension cord will be kinda cheap. Wire period ain't cheap although it has gone down quite a bit.

I had an extension cord made up for me on one of my jobs by the electrician and then at the end of the job it was give to me. About 20' long but I swear it's so stiff you can't roll it up and put it in a dump truck!! Gets the job done for the cost though, but like I said, the lincoln in the truck goes just about anywhere.

Depending on how rough you are and shop floor, you might consider mining cable or even an armored cable.

Yes it is cheaper to make your own as so many other have said, but it is very important to keep in mind Amp rating. Depending on length and draw of the welder, make sure you get the right size of cable whether you buy it finished or make it yourself. It is always better to go to heavier cable than too light.
Just another 2 bits.

It might cost a bit more or take a bit more time, but in the long run I wonder if you might be better off just moving the outlet to the other side of the shop, or adding a second outlet?

Only if OSHA shows up.

I made a 220 hook up cable for my generator. It was easy. But it was cheaper than buying a pre-made cord. I used a 4 wire cable, that was 4 gauge. Cost me $5 a foot, plus the end connectors. It was also color coded too (red, black, green, white).
