it all depends on what your intentions are for the truck

Streat use, a good LSD (same as posi). Staight line track use, spool. trail running, locker. I'd stay away from a "lincoln locker" unless your doing anything but offroading and even then I'd be leary.

In that case, I'd either stick to a good limited slip or posi. If you're on an unlimited budget, maybe an ARB air locker; best of both worlds. Your 8.25 probably has 26 spline axles. If you replace the whole differintial, I'd also up grade to the new 29 spline axles.
And diffenintely stay away from a spool and/or a "lincoln locker". You'll tear up tires and drivetrain parts like crazy; the truck will be a PITA to turn a corner or a curve in the road; and it'll just be a pain driving all together.

Opps. you're right. It's been a long time since I've dealt with an 8.25 diff. Detriot Locker makes a good LS. You know, maybe an EZ locker would work. Either Detriot or LockRite. Not as smooth as a limited slip. Can also get a little touchy on a wet road. But as long as you remember it's back there..........And of course the price is right. OR maybe search local wrecking yards. That same axle also came in Jeep XJ Cherokee's in the 90's. Up to '96, I believe, you'd find the 27 slpine. '97 to 2000 you can find 29 splines axles. My point is, LSD came from the factory as an option. Maybe you'd get lucky and find one, cheap.

The Detriot LS is a True-Trac. And it LockRight, not Lock-Rite. My bad. Anyways here-->http://www.quadratec.com/products/pr...kers&c=55&pg=1
These are listed for Jeeps, But a 8.25 is an 8.25. The only thing that matters is whether it's a 27 slpine or 29(?) spline axles....

If you are into junk yard diving then look for a cherokee with an 8.25 and limited slip in it, My '97 has the up-country package with the lsd and it is great, it operates very tight, in fact almost too tight on the street and if you find one in the junk yard it'd probably be pretty cheap.

Lock-Right makes a mechanically-operated unit for $378 at randys ring and pinion. And TracLoc makes a complete Posi Traction for $271 at randys ring and pinion. do these sound reasonable. it would be my luck that the posi out of the junk yard is garbage.

thanks
