Nope. I bump it, let it run for a few secs, then try to crank it and it'll crank for 5-10 secs depending on how long it's been sitting and then it'll fire right off and idle smooth as can be.

That's something different than mine! I hear your frustration!
If I had to crank mine 10 sec to start...I'd be upset too!

If you bump it and let the pump run it's full cycle, will it start then? Or do you still have to crank for 5-10 secs?

I wouldn't think you're losing prime in the high pressure lines, because I would expect it to idle rough till they were all re-primed (similar to first start after an injector swap). So it should be on the low pressure side of the VP44, but with good fuel pressure and letting the pump run it's cycle, it should be all clear. Unless your check valve isn't opening and you're trapping air.

It's not on the high pressure side. You crack the lines and there is plenty of fuel. When I pulled the old fuel line out of the injection pump fuel came pouring out of it (the injection pump) so it's definately getting fuel. It doesn't matter if I bump the key and try to crank while the pump is priming, let the pump finish priming and then crank, or don't prime the pump at all and try and crank, it takes a while to start. Parking up hill is really bad. If I park down hill it fires right up. My buddy's and I are all completely clueless on this.

Interesting, so it's somewhat related to gravity. When the pump is on the high side, fuel drains away. On the low side, fuel is always pushed up against it.

Can you check the check valve on the side of the VP44? Is it possible that it's not opening when your lift pump is priming the system so you can't push the air that got into the system out before cranking? The other question is, where is the air getting in?

Or maybe the check valve is stuck just slightly open. Enough to let air in, but not enough to push enough air out when you prime.

Just thinking out loud here....

Take a VP-44 apart and stare at where all the fuel goes (especially the spots that would be gravity dependent...ie...the parking uphill vs. downhill). If that doesn't work, put a different VP on there and if it does it after that it's not the fuel pump. BB apparently you have the money to do it.

What check valve are you talking about justin? I've replaced the over flow valve which is located right next to the inlet on the injection pump.

Matt, I'm going broke trying to fix this dang thing. Definately learned that when you start getting into the higher numbers stuff starts wearing out faster. That and 129k hard miles of neglect.

We're talking about the same one. The overflow that is supposed to open around 14psi or so. So I guess we can rule that one out then too, unless the new one is bad.

Maybe we should just take your VP44 apart next time at Charlies....we can just spread the pieces out on his deck. We'll find an issue for sure that way...maybe not the one causing your problem, but we'll definitely find an issue.

Possibly...Do you need measurements off my truck or can you just build one and bring it? Also I need to know what your price was again b/c there are a few that I've been looking at..

Quite possible that it is bad. Why not. Everything else is going bad why not this to. Boy I'll be glad when I start working again here in the next couple of weeks. Where's my patron?

I replaced mine also.... with no difference! All the threads I've read where others tried replacing the overflow, none solved their hard starts.

I give up guys....what is an 'SSSS'? Something I don't have??? I want one TOO! You can tell me what it is later, just get me one.
