MD Chapter #33 Never Ending thread #VII
in sense yes. but are they going to stop you i doubt it. even though there are on some hauling jobs i got that i was geting paid to tow there jet skis on there trailer. i was talking to some full time hot shotters and they said most of these laws arent bad around this area but in the mid west those cops look for everything. specially after the recent accidents lately with the buses. Also the accident on the bay bridge was a real good freind of mine
again in sense yes. are they going to stop every truck no. but if you hook a trailer to it specially going past the scales out 70 they can stop you and escort you back to the scale. when i mean dot #'s that also includes Dot card and the safety equipment (flares, fire ext., ect.)
for all you trailer pullers, rv's, single car trailer. New Dot rules are taken affect. if you would cross a scale over 10K no matter what you need DOT #'s. which means you need all the safety BS too. There free to get but you still have to stop at scales. if you borrow someones trailer you better have a permission slip the cop could say you were Hauling for hire, then you have to go to court. if you are hauling for hire and they stop you your in for a long day or days and forget out driving your truck home. i was just told this my the FMSCA here in glen burnie. Good news finally getting my Motor Carrier numbers, ernie if your on here start looking out for me at the scale house

So your saying that every 5th wheel camper in the state needs DOT#'s?
I don't see that happening. We need Ernie to chime in on what he knows about this.
That means my truck needs DOT #'s too, the door panel says 11K on it.
I would think this only applies to commercial vehicles, not every happy go lucky , voting, tax paying, Joe blow with his trailer.

yeah i was going to say just me pulling my bass boat can tip 10k. i know i'm over 10k with the 26 footer or a trailer with a car on it. oh well might be time to just go get my dot physical anyway.

6. When do I need a US DOT number or a MDDOT number? How do I get one?
Every commercial vehicle must display either a US DOT identification number OR a Maryland-issued Motor Carrier Identification Number (MDDOT number). Carriers must have only one identification number.
A USDOT number is proof you have registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) as a for-hire or private carrier.
You must register and obtain a US DOT number when:
· You operate commercial vehicles interstate.
· You cross state lines, including but not limited t Washington DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia.
· Interstate carriers can obtain a USDOT number immediately online at FMCSA website. Click on REGISTRATION AND ASSISTANCE: USDOT NUMBER/OPERATING AUTHORITY and follow the onscreen instructions. You can file the application online, or download to print the forms by clicking DOWNLOAD REGISTRATION FORM under HOW TO REGISTER.
A MDDOT number is required when a carrier does not cross state lines (remains intrastate) and does not handle interstate cargo.
· None of a carrier’s vehicles can ever cross state lines, including but not limited to Washington DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia.
· None of the vehicles can ever carry cargo that came from across state lines in a continuation of movement.
· Motor carriers that subsequently begin interstate operations must have their number converted to a US DOT number.
· The following vehicles, if only operated intrastate, may be exempt: Farm trucks and truck tractors, farm area motor vehicles, emergency vehicles, vehicles transporting money or commercial paper, vehicles owned or operated by the State or local government, and vehicles within 15 days of their purchase.

well i have a H2 cam on the way and hopefully soon i can get the cash together to get some 110 lbs springs thru TJ. then its tear down time for checking the pistons and cam and spring swap as well as installing my head studs
. also if you have a 50' camper you can tow it all day one time and not get a ticket, then the next day you can get stopped for not having dot#'s. basiclly you are between 2 laws. Its real bad for the guys towing there rigs to diff. events over state lines. I can bet next year there will be alot of guys getting stopped that are going to TS. maybe some some rigs not making it. If you are towing someone else and you say the trucks not mine and mention you are getting fuel money. YOU ARE HAUL FOR HIRE. This is after 3 phone calls to other hotshotters and the main Fmsca in washington
Check this truck out.
