Bitten by the Cummins bug.
Bitten by the Cummins bug.
Hello-
I had been trying to buy this ol Dodge truck parked in my buddies back yard for the last 7 years and he wouldnt sell. About 6 months ago he asked me if I still wanted it and so I bought it.
1968 D300 in great shape. Oil change, tires, brake master and some cab rubber and whether stripping and she is good to go.
Thats when it happened.
All my poking around in the Dodge world introduced the Cummins 5.9 12 valve to me and I have to have one. I have wanted to do a diesel but been busy my whole life with gas engines but the time has come. To make things worst, I got bit by a second bug...... 4x4. LOL
So long story short, I now know what I am building. I have lots of questions and a bunch of learning to do to put together the truck I am now wanting.
I know it would be easier to just throw a few thousand dollars out there and pick up a Dodge Diesel and drive it, but no, not me, I need to do it the hard way! LOL I do like old trucks better than new trucks and it keeps me off the streets causing trouble. LOL
I am also in the middle of another build, a 1941 Chevy 1/2 ton, with all the usual upgrades. That truck is nearing completion. Finish one before I start another you say? Nope, not me. Again, I roll the hard way. LOL
I will post some pics soon but right now I have some specific questions to ask to keep my busy brain fed with new info.
I am looking forward to participating in this forum, it seems to have more info than a guy could use in a lifetime.
Thanks
Jim

The 41 Chevy. Frame is boxed, x braced, ford 9 inch with chevy brakes (dont ask lol) 700r4 350 disc brakes etc. suspension and frame are done, motor and tranny is in. cab is painted and stuff is going together now.
The exterior skin of the truck is the only thing I left alone. All interiors and under sides are done up clean and painted but the exterior is "preserved" (again, dont ask lol)
I have not taken any pics in a while, I will have to do that.

Ya had to go there, didnt ya. I knew this forum would be trouble! LOL
Thinking? it stopped me in my tracks! I had not had that thought. Its not out of the question, thats for sure. What a perfect drivable little truck it would be.
Darn, I hope the moderators ban me, I dont need this kind of help right now. LOL but thanks anyway.
I have to tell you guys this story, its a good one.
I am looking looking looking for the conversion parts I need for months. Switching back and forth as I get up to speed on what I actually need.
A couple days ago I find this chassis, local, price a little on the steep side, but its an asking price and I can deal with the guy. I am excited.
I talk to the seller and determine I do want the chassis and its time to talk price. I tell him straight out "I want your chassis, gotta have it, but what can you do about the price? Interested in any trades for all or part of it?"
He defensively says "It depends on what you have to trade"
I say to myself, Great! its on, I got a lot of stuff!
I think for a min-
At this point I gotta tell you all that I went through a tractor phase and I have 11 of them. 2 Ford 2n's and 9 older garden tractors all very cool and some of them cooler than others!
I am wanting to get rid of most of them only keeping the ones I want. like 2, but they are not the easiest sell here in Southern California just a few miles from Beverly Hills.
So I think for a moment and say " I've got 11 tractors"
He very excitedly says "Now we're talkin!"
Talk about a match made in Heaven!
He has several himself, and likes them, bought some of them new!
I sent pictures and this weekend we talk.
Wish me luck.
