Wrong VP44 ?!?!?

I need some help. As I am low on funds, I procured a Cummins ReCon VP44 for my –98.5 24v CTD. The part number for the ReCon pump is 3944983-RX. The problem is that 2 different Cummins parts departments have told me that this ReCon pump part number does NOT cross to my engine’s serial number [56 439 040].

I’ve visually compared the VP44 that I’ve removed from my truck to the ReCon VP44 (side by side) and see no apparent difference.

Can anyone tell me WHY the ReCon pump might not work with my engine?

I’d really appreciate your reply as my truck is down and I really need to get it back into service (for work).
Thanks very much for your help,
Bill

I did find that number on a web site and it is indeed a Cummins part number, but didn't find what application it fit. Better call Cummins.

Thanks for the replies...

As you can see, my engine serial number and the ReCon part number are in my original post.

I talked to Piers today and I was told that, although they don't think much of the ReCon pumps, the one I'm considering to install will work.

Considering that two Cummins parts guys [at two different service centers] told me it "didn't cross," I'm really confused now.

Does anyone know the reason the pump might not work?? Is it because of the electronics [timing issues]??

I mean, shouldn't any IP made for the 24v ISBs work?? If not, can you give me an idea of why it wouldn't.

Thanks again,
Bill

will it work? most likely yes. why does it not match number wise? here is a guess or two. it could be a pump designed for a hd larger truck. it also could be designed for industrial use on a stationary motor. i would find out what it fits and its intended use before i would install it. where did you buy it from? it also may be designed for non emmission use. get the facts on it.

Ive read in some repair manuals that there is a 3 digit code on the pump and when replacing you should match with the same code.

The three digit number stamped on the pump needs to match the number stamped on the key that is installed in the keyway of the pump for timing purposes.
