it won't start !

I forgot to plug in the heater on my '99 2500 SLT 4x on our first cold night ( 20*)
didn't make it to work the next morning, truck wouldn't start. I plugged it in, put the charger on it, waited several hours, still no start.
Got the owner's manual & Hanes manual out for info. Replaced the fuel filter, added some anti-gel stuff, bled the system, no go. Talked to a few friends with Dodges, decided to replace the lift pump. More cranking & bleeding, the new pump quit working. Replaced the relay, was surprized it was less than $ 10.00. The pump worked again,so I thought I was finally getting somewhere.
At this point, 3 weeks later, I've probably bled a 1/4 tank through the darned thing. It sounds like it wants to fire, but won't. Tried a little starting fluid...NOT MUCH !!! It ran briefly.
I've had it about 6 months, about 110,000 miles on it, it's been very well maitained & I haven't had any trouble with it until now.
I just read about checking the anti-theft option & I'm going out right now to check for any codes.
I love the truck, I've worked on diesels off & on for 30 yrs, I'm getting real frustrated... I'll be back to check for any sugjestions & give you the latest.
Thanks, DaveG.

if it fired on starting fluid and the lift pump is known to be functional, i'd say the injection pump is toast---not too uncommon on 24 valve motors, sadly. If the old lift pump was not supplying enough fuel volume and pressure, injection pump damage is almost a guarantee. others more familiar with the 24v will chime in, I'm sure.

Where have you bled from? What anti-gel did you use? I have heard that the Power Service 911 stuff works well. Possible that all of the bleeding has lead to a cracked line, or an air leak somewhere? I am just thinking out loud here. I sincerely hope you can get this fixed!! Any p0216 code?

it still won't start & I know why

Fellow Cummins fans ?
A buddy with a '96 3500 Ram 4X ranch truck towed me the ten miles to town, his stock rig has a 5 speed, 4:11's, 200K mi. runs great & he says 22 mpg. This is one of the Dodges that convinced me I wanted one.
At our other buddy's shop we plugged in the scanner as he was admiring my truck, imagine my elation when I was able to verify that the injector pump I've become so fond of died a horrible death. Horrible because it was preventable & real hard on the wallet. Got a 1688 error code.
Made a call to Spokane Diesel, a well known inj. & pump rebuilder, often same day service. They don't work on the new electronic pumps (can't immagine why), send them to California, 3 day service, 1 yr. warranty, $ 1300. Best deal I've found. He recommended lift pumps from Dodge, Cummins, "they now use Dephi, other brands don't reliably deliver correct volume/pressure. When the lift pump fails, the inj. pump develops a vacuum & breaks an internal disc & it fails." I'm going to put in a FP gauge, but they sell an LED lift pump alarm signal kit (idiot light if in Ford or Chevy ... just kidding) for about $ 65.00.
If I read the manual right, special tools aren't required, and the proceedure is straight forward.
So for Xmas not only do I get to spend more on me than her, I get a "new" pump, & I get to put it in too.
Someone suggested using a quart of ATF per tank for inj. pump lube, any thoughts ?
Merry Xmas. dg

That is OLD SCHOOL technology. I mean one room, all grades together type. Do yourself a favor and call Spokane Diesel and ask them. Just go to your local store and get some Power Service in the white bottle and you will be set. Use the gray bottle in the summer.
BTW, there are quite a few other fuel treatments that are readily available too.

Have you called Cummins and aksed them how much a injection pump costs. I am not sure how much they are but I think that this is where most of the poeple here get them from. Cheapest price. Wouldn't hurt to check it out.

Well, here's the latest, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE ATF IN YOUR FUEL SYSTEM, YOUR "O" RINGS WON'T LIKE IT, FORGET I MENTIONED IT, Please.
I ordered the inj. pump on line from Midwest Fuel Injection Service last Sun. night (19 th) got it 9 AM on the 24 th. They paid the shipping, & I didn't have to pay the Wa. state 8% sales tax. The bill was $ 1475, I get $ 400 back when they get my core. They e-mailed me to let me know they received the order, when it went out,
the UPS tracking # & when I could expect delivery. I'm impressed with their service & recommend them to anyone in need of an inj. pump.
I'd planned on installing it today, but I'm trying to recover from food poisoning I got having lunch with a client last Wednesday. Some days you wonder why you got out of bed, but I'm in a lot better frame of mind than I was at my last posting.
SOOOOOO, does anyone have suggestions regarding where I should set pump timing for a little more oomph ? A little more engine noise won't bother me,I played electric guitar in bands for 20 years, I'm already deaf, huh ?
One last thing, this web site & all of you are a godsend, thanks,& happy holidays.
I'll be back later to see what's up on timing. a happier daveg.

Dave G, You cannot change the timing , when you remove the pump make sure the keyway is straight up. Be careful not to drop nut, washer or key in timing case. The pump you get will have a key matched to it there is a number stamped on the key and the same on pump. JUST MAKE SURE WHEN YOU REMOVE OLD PUMP THAT THE KEY IS STRAIGHT UP. You can look at this with a mirror a flashlite. Good luck. Thanks Steve B.

Steve B, thanks for the tip(s) Sounds like the injector pump & crank must be geared 1:1 so I don't have to worry about being 180* out ? Or... as long as the key is straight up, it's in the right place relative to the crank & don't need to worry about degrees ? WILL NOT drop anything in timing cover ! Thanks again, hope to have it running tomorrow. daveg

Ahh...to hear the sweet sound of that engine ! Hopefully this will be my last "help" post for a while. Installed the rebuilt injector pump $ 1075.00 , no big deal, the hardest part was just geting to all the fastners, etc. evrything is so tightly jammed into the engine compartment. Thank god it's not a V -8 !
Before that was a new lift pump (carter) & filter from napa, new relay from the dealer. Found a 0-100 psi gauge hoses & fittings in the garage, salvaged from an old Freightliner semi tractor out in the back 40 hooked it up, rests between the hood & windshield. Reads 10 psi up to WOT, then falls to 6-8.

What I've learned : 1) This is a GREAT site ; 2) I will not buy another carter lift pump from napa or anyone else ; 3) Mid-West Fuel Injection service served me well ; 4) Replacing pumps, filters, etc. doesn't require a degree in rocket science, just a good elevated platform to stand on /work from; the ablity to stand on your head for several hours; be blessed with small hands for tight engine compartments ( I am not so blessed) ; have a real complete std. & metric tool set ( I do) including stubby wrenches & steering wheel puller ( don't but will soon). 4) All of you members out there collectively have a wealth of knowledge & info and are there to help the rest of us... THANK YOU ! 5) I really do love my truck.
See ya !
