I don't know your truck, but my 2001.5 wouldn't start when I had the fuel system apart to check flow between the lift pump and the VP44. The procedure I followed didn't specify that bleeding was necessary, but it was.
I loosened (don't remove) the banjo bolt on the return line from the VP44 and bumped the starter to get the lift pump to run 25 seconds and purge air from the line. Tightened it up and tried to start. No dice. Bled it again. Saw some air bubbles escaping with the diesel. Tightened it up and started right up.

Danger-----on your 04 the fuel pressure is extremely high from the injector pump to the injectors. Do not loosten and/or bleed the lines this way. Just make sure your fuel filter is full of fuel. Take the cover off if nothing else and bump the starter till the canister fills up. Then place the filter in the canister install the cover and try starting. It may take a few tries but eventually it should start. If the cannister does not fill then your lift pump probably has failed or you have a leak in your fuel line letting air get into it and that is your problem. If so it may have damaged the injector pump also but you will have to repair the LP first so you can check anything further.

Like I said, I don't know the 04. Agreed, the pressure to the injectors is quite high. I didn't mean to suggest that he bleed between the injector pump and the injectors. Instead, I was referring to bleeding the return line that exits the injector pump and returns fuel to the tank. Does the 04 have a VP44 and a return line, like the 01?

If the 325 HP engine it is an 04.5 and has a CP-3 (Bosch pump) More lenient than the VP44 was as far as lower fuel pressure but still can still easially be damaged by low or no fuel pressure. Not sure about the 04 as I started my Dodge ownership with the 04.5 325/600 auto setup and probably experianced every fuel problem that they had. Traded and now have the 07 5.9.
