WIF question for Diesel newbie

I hunted back quite a few pages here and couldn't find an answer so here goes.

I'm approaching 3000 miles on my 2006 Dodge Diesel, this is my first Diesel.

I can't find any definitive information in my owners manual that says when I should drain the water from the fuel. I've read on Fords every 5k, I was told by the Dodge salesman every 10th tank of gas (4k with my driving), I've also read to drain it when the WIF light comes on?

I've read to do it every fill up. I've also heard every fuel filter change. I usually do it when I'm messing around under the hood for one reason or another. Every time I've done it, all that's come out is straight #2.

I change mine evey time I change my oil which is around 7500 miles. I run half synthetic and half regular. I drain the ruel filter everytime just in case I got some bad diesel. After you drain it try to start the truck; it ill probobly start and then die. Then try to start it again and crank it for a few seconds then let off the key. (don't turn it off just stop cranking.) You will hear a pump turn on and it will purge the system. I turn mine back off then back on and start it. That in mind, I would always drain it.

I think my manual said something like every other fill-up. However I figured I really didn't want to crawl under the truck to place a catch can and I'm sure that the stations wouldn't appreciate me dumping it on their concrete. So I did the same thing you did and asked around on the various forums. The majority said they drained it when they changed the filter or if the WIF light came on. The first couple of filter changes, I found no water and I had also installed fuel pressure gauges which allowed me to monitor my PSI before and after the filter. That's when I stopped doing filter changes according to mileage. I go by the DP across the filter now.
In my case, I always buy fuel from high volume truck stops and the same stations 90% of the time. Now I know that this doesn't mean I won't get water in a batch of fuel, but it cuts down on the chances.
I also feel that the less I mess with that PLASTIC petcock,,, the better off I'll be in the long run. When I do change a fuel filter, I always inspect the fuel and clean things up. 118,000 miles and no problems with fuel yet,,,,,,,, well,,,, if ya don't count running it empty when the fuel level sending unit took a dump at around 60k. OOPS!...

One thing to make sure of if you do plan on emptying the filter housing. Make sure that you know the procedure for bleeding air out of the injector lines just in case the old "purging with the lift pump trick" doesn't work for you.
It's not hard to do as long as you have the couple of standard tools to do it and knowing how means one more option before calling a tow truck. I was very glad I had learned how when I ran mine dry that time!

Thank you for the comments...I have 14 prepaid oil changes (7yrs) So I'll just do it with each oil change, unless the light comes on.

P.S. Anyone have intermittent rough idle before warm up?
