white smoke and terrible miss

Guys i ran my diesel out of fuel, and cant get it running again. Stupid I know. But here is the deal, I have changed the fuel filter twice, but it is still running crazy. It will Idle for a while, then i can run it up to 3000 but it then coughs and blows white smoke and ultimately dies. I am at a loss.

its most likely a lift pump but i had a truck that cracked the pickup tube and it would do almost the same thing, under load during high fuel demands(accel)it would suck enough air inthe tube to cause it to die

I would have the dealer check the lift pump, If you run it to long like that it might eat up your IP if it hasn't already.

I don't think the P0500 is related it lists to be the vehicle speed sensor.

P0500 is speed sensor. Usually not a problem. Can come up with fast idling, or spining the tires. P 1693 from the ECM is a compainion code that says there is a code that is in there, and a scanner might be needed to read it.

Never like hearing a 24valve blowing white smoke and missing. That usually indicated a valve sticking in the pump causing improper fuel delivery.....the bucks that cost makes the lift pump look like chump change. First things first. You need to have someone check the fuel delivery system. Quick fuel psi check and flow check. If that's ok, you need to move on up the line. I suspect you'll fine a code in the ECM. When you do the "key" trick it should say "pcm" and then any codes, followed by "ecm" and then any codes. Try it again.

...I'm puttin my $$$ on a VP

Did you crack the injector lines to bleed air from the system? Since you ran it out of fuel it may need to be primed...also, wouldn't hurt to fill the filter housing with fuel first...didn't see this mentioned in the previous posts but just a thought...back when I had my stock filter assembly and lift pump if I did a filter change I couldn't get the thing to start to save my life until I filled the filter canister and bled the lines.
