Wheels and tires !!!!

I need some help with a couple of questions. What is the back spacing and width of the rims. I would like to find a set of black steel rims with the stock back spacing. Will I be able to run 285's with 3.55 gears and not lose any power. Any help with this problem would be great.

May also want to move this from the help forum to the appropriate 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gen forum.

Re:Wheels and tires !!!!

The backspacing of the stock 2002 aluminum looking wheels is around 6 1/2 inches.
I think the aluminum wheel is 16x9 inches, and the plain jane rim is 16x8.

<edit> I guess I'll have to measure my stockers too make sure, I'll do that tonite. Could've sworn the 2001-2002's were wider than 8 inches.

I don't know of an aftermarket wheel that has that much backspacing, most have 3.5 or 4.5 inches.

With an auto tranny, you'll lose a little of power off the line, but with the cummins torque, it shouldn't really be a problem.

I have 3.55 gears and an automatic and 315 tires (34.75 inches) and I noticed the sluggishness off the line, and maybe a little cruising power loss.
My rims have the 4.5 backspacing and at 10 inches they wide stick out almost 3 inches past the fender.

Re:Wheels and tires !!!!

The stock aluminum wheels on the Ram are 16x7.5" and the chrome steel "directional" wheels are 16x6". Don't know about the basic steel wheels. The backspacing on all is 6.25".

Re:Wheels and tires !!!!

Measured the rims that came on my truck from the dealer.

They are indeed 16 x 9 inches. (lip to lip)
Backspacing is 6.25 inches.

That would be these rims.
The aluminum/forged ones.
(truck looks way different now, in a good way ;D)

Re:Wheels and tires !!!!

It's a pic from my album.
Just opened up the pic in the album, right clicked on it to get properties, copied and pasted the properties inbetween the "img" boxes gotten from clicking on the little icon with a picture in it (between the globe/folders and email) above.

Amazing what a difference a little over a year makes when it comes to the trucks appearance.

Unless I'm measuring them wrong.
Went out with the tape measure last night when I got home from work.
I did measure outside lip to outside lip.
Maybe I should have gone inside lip, but the lips aren't 1/2" each.

Just checked my window sticker (I keep them for future reference in the glovebox)
and it says 16X8 Forged Aluminum.
Must be inside lip measurements.
Original wheels are 16X7.5 Steel (it had them listed on sticker as well).

Should have checked that the first time.
