What's up with the tranny

I am a newbie here and I hope this is enough of an emergnecy to qualify for this thread...

Go easy on me if it's not.

Just yesterday I noticed / felt that the tranny wouldn't start off in first. I have a 98' 12valve s/b 4x4 with an auto. Upon starting from a stop - there is a quit a load on the engine and the best way to describe what's going on is like starting in 2nd or 3rd in a manual. The engine needs to rev, slow acceleration, and slipping to get going to speed. Once up and moving everything else seems to be perfroming well. I have 182k on the ol girl and plan on keeping it that much again. I did have the tranny upgraded or at least gone through (heavier springs, synthetic oil, shift kit, etc) at about 100k miles when I started to add some upgrades to the the engine for some more power and boost. I have had the rear end go out and got it re-built at about 150k miles.

What does this problem sound like? How quickly should I stop driving it and get it worked on? Any suggestions on upgrades to the tranny if indeed it needs re-buit?

Thanks in advance.

If that is the 47RE tranny, it may be in limp mode, for a variety of reasons. Does it still go into OD? I think limp mode makes OD not work also.

47 REs were used in 96 and newer 2nd Generation trucks. To me, it sounds just fine. My old tranny used to do that quite a few times, and my Goerend does it sometimes, too. I find that if I come to a COMPLETE stop it shifts down every time. If the wheels are rolling even a little bit it sometimes won't kick down. It may be as simple as your TV cable needing adjustment.

Here's some more information - it will go into 1st and 2nd manually and shifts all through those gears, it also goes into overdrive and the direct drive as well. All that works great, it only won't downshift when the shifter is in 'D' and you come to a stop, but it will shift down out of direct drive to overdrive, and to 3rd. I have it going in to the local best recomended shop this week.

Thanks for the help so far.

Sounds like the pressure sensor or sellenoid. I had 2 go now and it was the same thing it wont shift into low with out manually pulling it down.
