We need some help. 7.3 ford 1996

Our 1996 ford 350 with the 7.3 started acting up. It has the G/N plate and the cattle are at the fair grounds. lol... We need help.

Is ok to ask about fords here? SOrry but really do need help if we can get it.

Truck starts right up, after moment it runs with a loping idle. it will hardly get rpms... runs real rough.

We checked the fuel a couple of weeks ago when it first acted up, found some water and drained and cleaned out the cannister. Checked for water a couple of more times and we have none. The truck was on the road and ran fine since we found the water.

We replaced the cam position sensor on the reccomendation of local mechanic. He used the hand held computer to try to pull codes but came up with none. new cps did not help.

any suggestions? Thanks..... Cows need a ride to another fair grounds sunday afternoon... lol

Basics

When was the last engine service (oil air fuel filters and oil change)?
The fords if i recall use elecrohydraulic injectors. (electrical signal opens a hydraulic valve which fires the injector). Otherwise check for possible air intrusion in fuel lines.

The oil has been changed since the first time we had a problem. all filters are new. about a month or so ago the truck just cut off and quit. I am not sure if that was under power or not. I know he had to wait a little bit and it started back up.

I was told there is a sensor that regulates the oil pressure to the injectors? That it has a screen on it and it that screen could be clogged. Supposed to have a guy come out and scan it with his laptop.... he didnt show last night, maybe he'll show up today. Still looking for some pointers. thanks guys

I knew that was coming. lol... I dont bother to look for a site like dtr for the 7.3. It just wasnt something I considered. I love my cummins. The ford was bought new in 96 and it was not my decision. I guess I will have to look for a ford site, But I am suprised none of my cummins drivin friends could "HELP". lol... Gotta get back at it.

did u check your fuel pressure and that the hpop is full of oil, the wiring harnesses at the valve covers tend to fray, check them too. they tend to lope when first started because of a mechanical fuel pump, an electric pump upgrade is available from dieselsite.com....sounds like your fuel pump is on its way out or they tend to leak fuel on top of the manifold.

there have been a lot of problems with the fuel pump sucking air.... there is a kit you can get to replace the lines and the in tank strainer .........also this......In the Powerstroke fuel system, the Injection Pressure Regulator (IPR) controls the oil bypass circuit of the high pressure pump. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) controls fuel delivery to the injectors by increasing/decreasing the IPR duty cycle which increases/decreases fuel pressure through the injectors.

If you encounter low oil pressure, poor idle, stalling or no-start difficulties, the problem may be with the IPR unit. Remove and inspect the IPR o-rings for wear or damage. Often replacing the o-rings will fix the problem and is much less expensive than replacing the complete IPR unit.

Now available is the Injection Pressure Regulator Repair Kit which includes the o-ring and jam nut needed to service the IPR unit.

Remember, when reinstalling the IPR unit to torque the IPR to 35ft/lbs and do not use sealer on the IPR threads,as there is an orifice in the threaded area which the sealer could plug.

Before removing the IPR. Unplug the ICP sensor, this will throw the engine into default mode, at 2000 psi HPO. if the idle smoothes out, you have found your culprit. If not, then go deeper in. It can also be a fuel pressure issue, caused by a faulty lift pump. On the 96, it should be a piston pump, located to the rear of the fuel filter housing, in the bottom of the valley.

Thanks for the info. We got lucky and the neighbor came home and lent us his gm diesel/allison dually. The old man drove it and is now thinking of spending money he does not have. lol

A friend came out and hooked his laptop to it but it would not connect. He cant figure out why. He thinks it is a bad injector and is pointing at #8, But cant be sure. We are supposed to have another laptop connected to it this week. Sorry I am not familiar with the software they have but they say it will diagnose the problem. If it will connect.

We will look at these suggestions. thanks so much guys.

That sounds just like an UVC (under valve cover harness) has either come undone or fried itself. Very common with the 7.3's. If the software your buddy is using is Auto Enginuity, he MUST have the Ford enhanced bundle or it will not pull any of our codes. With that, he has to select NON OBD-II compliant on the connection settings. Most likely it is the harness. While the truck is running disconnect a side, if it still runs connect it back up and unplug the other side. If it stalls the other side is the culprit. Hope this sounds clear. If not PM me and I will give you my cell.

Did you use the correct oil in the oil change? I'm not sure if it applies to this engine but I've heard that some Powerstroke engines would not run correctly if the wrong oil was used. Something about the oil foaming up? I can't remember the exact details but I'm sure there'll be somebody here who's a lot smarter than me and will likely know!
