Question vp44 replacing it HELP

What is involved in replacing the injector pump on my 1998 dodge 24v truck? are their special tools needed? are their some tricks to replacing it ?how much is a rebuilt pump I am in Austin and their very few shops that work on diesel trucks. My lift pump went out so ,I have installed a fass pump system and on my system is losing prime I think my injector pump is out . The truck will start with either on a rag in front of the intake and will run and start fine after but when it sits over night it will not start. I do not see anty leaks can some one help with advice. thanks werner

If you do a search on here and possibly on Blue Chip Diesel you will find some pretty good blow by blow instructions for changing out your injection pump. I've never done one but will not hesitate to do it when it fails the next time. Do you have any codes? Did the hard start condition begin after you changed your lift pump or was it there before? Go over the new work and make sure that nothing is leaking or sucking air and look for bad rubber or connections throughout the complete fuel system. I would thing that the loss of prime will show up there, not in the injection pump. Also be carefull with that rag starting aid. The last thing you need is to get something sucked into the turbo. Good luck for now and I'm sure others will post with more and probably better info.

Try changing that valve on the return side of the IP (its the banjo bolt)
cheap chance.

Doesn't sound like a bad VP if it runs fine once fired... I'd check the valve mentioned before and check all fuel fittings for leaks... If air can get in it will cause the had start...

Stay away from rag starting.. If you need to loosen a couple of injector lines with a 19mm wrench and crank..

Check out fass website. There is an article on there about hard starting after fass install. If memory serves me they said that it is a common condition with a damaged or dying vp44.

I would second the check valve replacement and watching for air in the fuel lines. Sure sounds like typical symptoms of losing prime, not of dead IP - like dead pedal, white smoke and no start, period.

Look in Tech Facts on this site. Under 24 valve engine you will find vp44 removal and replacement. Pictures show tools needed and the write up goes through the whole process. Good Luck.

Don't forget a crowfoot 19mm for #6. Harbor freight for about $11 for the set I think. These also work nice for removing/installing the lines from the rear of the pump. Make sure you don't drop the key in the pump shaft while removing or installing. Also be sure to remove the washer behind the shaft nut and don't drop it either.
