VP-44 R&R clarification

I'm about to change out the VP-44 on the wife's '01. I've read the posts from a lot of the folks that have already done it and the NWbombers web page. The question I have is this: When removing the VP-44 pump gear, does it remain in place in the timing case and the pump is removed from the engine? Or, does the pump and gear get removed from the engine as one and then get separated after the pump is removed?

Any other helpful hints or suggestions?

-Joe

The gear stays in the timing cover make sure the key way is up! and the pump pulls straight out the back.

Thanks Rick. I just got back from OKC with the new pump and I found out that I don't have court this afternoon. I've got the rest of the day to get this done.
