Question 04 exhaust "component" clarification pls

Can someone tell me what is in the exhaust system for the early 04? It seems every post I see has conflicting info. Also does removing any of the components add power? Lastly I live near a facility where I can buy stainless tubing or pipe cheap. Plus I know a muffler guy and am wondering if I can benefit money wise by having a system bent up? One idea most will hate is to have duals coming out behind each tire-w-flat, maybe 2X10" tips ala nascar. BTW I am not a Nascar fan but I do like this look.

To go cheap for the time being, Lose the muffler great performance, mileage increase alittle. I had muff shop put in a piece of 4" pipe that I got from a big truck shop $45 for the labor $24 for the 5' piece of pipe this is only temp. though.Runs like a spotted ape.

Can you really tell the difference-w/o-the muff as far as performance goes? I can handle this change myself if it is worth it. What are your longer range plans?
