VP-44 Injection pump replacement....won't start now!

Ok.....I replaced my lift pump along with my injection pump on my 99 Dodge 3500 and the dang thing won't start. I have tried cracking the injectors to bleed the air but no luck. I have replaced the fuel filter before and had a hell of a time getting it started back up, but was able to just by cracking open the first injector. I take it I got a lot of air in the lines replacing the pump. Is there a certain procedure to follow to bleed these lines? Thanks!

Did you line up the keyway perfectly? Do you have a factory service manual? It explains the proper air bleed procedure in detail.

I just replaced my VP last week and I had an easier time getting it to start than I do when I change fuel filters.

Check your Lift Pump. You might not be getting much if any fuel.

Alright, the air bleed procedure is as follows.....

1) Disconnect inlet from LP to VP$$.
2) Bump key to get LP to pump and verify you have fuel at inlet to VP$$.
3) If you have fuel at VP$$ reconnect inlet and attempt to start the truck by cranking
no longer than 30 second intervals. Do this 2 or 3 times
4) If unit fails to start loosen HP lines at injectors 3, 4, and 5. Crank at 30 second
intervals again. Unit may start with HP lines loosened. If this happens quickly
tighten them and raise RPM between 1200-1500.
5) If unit still does not start repeat all steps until it does.

The 24V VP$$ equipped trucks are known for being very easy to bleed air by themselves. The truck may run rough for a few moments after startup, but as soon as you raise the RPM it should smooth right out.

Let me know once you have it started.

Why are you replacing these items to begin with? Ive seen alot of misdiag'd fuel level sending units. make sure you got fuel all the way up to the VP. also check the fuel system relay.

Sometimes it takes a while. How long have you been cranking it, trying to start it with the line cracked?

ok....I do have fuel up to the VP$$. LOL! That's right...$$...it's an expensive part! I have cracked all the injectors that I can get to and there is fuel squirting out of the ones I have cracked open. I am not sure of the numbes, but if you are looking from the front of the motor I have been able to crack 1, 2, 4, 5. Do I actually have to bleed each one for it to fire. The 4 that I have cracked have fuel squirting out in good quantity. I am trying not to crank the motor too long...guess I'm a bit scared of burning out my starter. I just didn't think it would be soooooo difficult. The thing started fine before I put the new lift pump and injection pump in. The new pump went in in the same position and everything. I am getting ready to have this thing towed to Dodge first thing in the morning if I can't figure it out. Is there any calibration on the pump that needs to be done? The thing should just bolt in and work, right? It has fuel coming out of 4 injector lines. (the ones that I can get to)

You're doing it right. No need to open #1, the factory service manual specifies 3, 4, and 5. The only thing you could have done wrong is not line up the keyway. If that is the case the pump timing will be off and you will be sending fuel at the wrong time to the wrong cylinder.

I'm far from the VP$$ R & R expert, but I have never gone wrong when following the service manual exactly.

Maybe J BODY or I think HOHN will chime in yet tonight as I think they have each done a fair share of VP$$ swaps.
