turbo maybe shot

the otherday when i turned off my truck i thght i heard something in the turbo area. something liek metal rubbing. maybe i was just imagining it. but then i went back out later when it was cold and pulled off the turbo intake hose and checked to see if it was losse or wobbled or anythign and it felt free and everything. so then i had my gf start the truck and then i revved it up and gave her the signal to shut it off. and it stopped abuot 8 seconds after shutting off. normally it spinns for abuot 45 seconds or more. but then i got to thinking that could been becuase it was cold and everything right there. then when i go to leave that night the turbo was sounding liek a ford turbo. it sounded liek it was alot louder and whistled alot more. maybe its just my sinuses playing with me or something. i sure hate head colds. oh yea and i did put back on the intake hose so that was not it. im pretty sure it is fine becuase ive shut it off alto more and aint heard that noise again. so maybe im ok. what do yall think?

Next time pull the intake hose off and look for any marks where the blades have been rubbing. Try to make it rub. If you see any marks or can make it rub, your turbo needs attention. I kinda doubt that you will have any rubbing issues. Have your boost levels changed? If so, look for a boot leaking or even the intake gasket(s) leaking. Let us know what you find out.

Matt, mine does that sometimes too. I can hear a sound like a bearing rubbing when the turbo winds down with the engine off. Sounds like the sound is coming from the glovebox. I had my diesel mechanic check it out and he told me that turbos hardly ever go out. I think I'll change it anyways just because. I'd rather buy a new turbo than a new turbo and intercooler and whatever else the scattered parts may break.<edit> one more note. The turbo is fed pressurized oil from the enigine. When the engine is turned off there is no longer any pressurized oil being fed to the bearings. With the open element air filter maybe the noise is just more noticable.??????
