Turbo Chernobyl

Every once in a great while my turbo would howl in the morning just for a moment and then quit, acting normally after that. This morning it didn't quit, and I think the turbo trashed. I couldn't build any boost, and by the time I got 1/2 the way home I started fogging big time. My guess is the oil seal broke. Before this I had no excessive lateral or endplay in the turbo shaft at all.

I don't know where to go from here. Is it possible the oil feed clogged?

I need advice.......

Have you checked the shaft for play?

You were seeing oil smoke out the pipe, not black diesel smoke?

I just got home to check the damage. The smoke started out as black POD smoke, and then it started with what looked like oil smoke.
I'm scared to look, and if there is metal missing from the compressor side I'm going to drink diesel until I die!!!

It'll be OK. A little bit of aluminum won't hurt the motor. The 24 valve motors usually survive dropping an injector tip.

Well, I'm warming up some K2 (low sulphur, of course) right now. The compressor wheel took a good amount off of the housing. Also the nut was about to work it's way loose. The whole shaft is totally loose. I just checked it last week and it was fine.

Now I don't know if it took out my rings.

Dave, do you think my beloved 16cm is shot? I still have my 18.5 but I hate that darn thing because it's such a lazy pig at this altitude....

I doubt you hurt the turbine housing.

I talked to HTT, and they had one stage IV left on the shelf (more will be ready in a few weeks) so they pulled it for me. They estimate in the $650 range but it will carry a complete warranty like a new one.

How much power increase might I see Dave?

Not a whole lot, maybe 10-15 HP. The truck will feel better at the top end and EGT should drop about 150 degrees.
