Truck wont start. Nothing
Truck wont start. Nothing
Tried to start the truck this morning and nothing.......Almost like I left something on over night.
Tried jumping with a known good battery and still nothing.
The truck is not crankning at all.
Fuel pump comes on, and everything else is normal.
Had a friend come over and tried to jump the truck with his diesel and still nothing.
Looked and tested for two hours and found that the batteries are good, there is voltage to the starter on the big red cable. There is no voltage to the starter on the small cable when you turn the ignition to run.
I was able to jump the truck by putting the key in Run, and putting 12 volts to the small wire at the starter.
I have searched here and found that it could be the neutral saftey switch.
I had tried starting the truck in neutral and still nothing.
Where is the neutral safety switch located and can I just jump it to make it run untill I can get a new switch.
Any links to diagrams would be helpfull.
Thanks

No Start (Engine Will Not Crank) Due To A Blown Starter Relay Circuit Fuse
Found the fuse and sure enough, it was toast. Thanks for the lead...
There is actually a pre-TSB and a subsequent TSB on this.
I found it on www.dodgeram.org
Here are a few links with all this info.
I added info to the title for search purposes

Usually the first thing to do upon electrical system failure of any type is check the appropriate fuses and relays; fuses are easy to see if they're blown or not, and replace suspect relays with known good ones (there's plenty in the PDC under the hood)
I swapped relays around and checked all the fuses that I thought were neccessary. Honestly, I had no idea how the system worked and I don't recall having seen fuses on starter solenoids before.
My fault for not checking all the fuses.....
But I learned something and hopefully my research can help others along the way....

Now you need to find out why the fuse blew. In my situation, the fuse blew about twice in three months, then suddenly just about everyday until I replaced the starter. Now it is fine but I'm going to put a 25 amp fuse in place of the 20 amp like the tsp suggested.

If you read all the info that I linked you will see that it is a wiring size problem. I assume it sometimes takes more than the 20amp to start the truck and the 25 amp fuse resolves this. Dodges fix is to put a new relay curcuit in to handle the higher current load. I don't think I have the link here, but I actually found a quote from a Dodge employee and it was his task one day to replace all the starter solenoid fuses with 25 amp fuses before the trucks were sold. He actually complained about how ethical this really was, and I can understand.
I am going to go to Dodge and check to see if they will give me the TSB required relay wiring harness and install that myself.

XLR, I was replacing the fuse with a new one each time it blew and sometimes it would blow immediately when I turned the key or last two or three starts, so it wasn't worn out fuses.
B4, let us know what they say about the harness. I,too, am not real comfortable with putting in a higher rating fuse without ungrading the wiring.
Again, replacing the starter fixed the problem for now. I suspect that worn solenoid contacts were causing an excessive current draw.
