Truck won't start

Truck won't start
While trying to get my truck unstuck (as in mud) It shut down on me and I have been unable to get it to start. The following conditions have been noted. 1. Check eng light stays on. 2. No fuel or very little fuel from cracked injector line fitting when eng is cranked. 3. dtc po216 code when codes were read. 4. Checked pins 6&7 on injector pump ,12v dc present with ign sw on run. I am pretty sure that the injector pump has failed but would like to know if maybe I have overlooked something. Truck is 2001 SLT CDT 2500 with no mods. 24 valve.

If you have the p0216 code, you have a problem with your VP44. Translation: EXPENSIVE. I hope your truck is under warranty. Do you have a fuel pressure gauge on? If you do what is the pressure reading? If you don't have one, you need to get one on. You should also fill in your sig so we can help more.

I am in the process of replacing my injection pump. I am not clear on reinstalling the injector pump gear. I have read that all you have to do is remove with keyway up and reinstall with keyway up. Question, is it possible for one to reinstall and be off a tooth or two? I am not very clear on how the timming process works. Also , does the pump gear come completely out of the gear case or does it stay in the case? The hole looks very small to me.

The gear is quite large, and stays in the housing, in mesh. I don't believe it can jump a tooth, but be gentle. Use a puller with 2 bolts to release the gear from the tapered shaft, after undoing the shaft nut. Be sure the key is right for that pump, and that it is facing the right way, and that it will not fall easily out of its slot. When installing the new pump, I always use a mirror to be sure I can see the key in the keyway before tightening the nut.
