Truck stranded in San Antonio TX.
Transmission started making a howling noise and then I heard a pop! I pulled over and there was transmission fluid leaking every where. The transfer case split in half where the front drive shaft ties into it. What the heck? I was on I-10 and only driving about 60 mph. I live in Bay City TX. The truck is at a local dodge dealer there. I am waiting on an estimate to have it repaired. I may want to trailer it home from there. Does any one have any ideas as to what may have happened? Also any ideas for towing or trailoring from San Antonio..

I appreciate the feed back. The dealer called me this morning the transfer case is definitely the culprit. It is indeed cracked. The dealer has never seen this before. They have no idea and I don’t either. When traveling down the road and not in 4WD the transfer case is not engaged. I spoke with a mechanic earlier and he told me that the front bearing has a retainer ring that holds it in the forward position. If the retainer ring comes out the bearing will float back and hit the gear the gear will thrust the bearing forward and possibly crack the case. Oh well the dealer wants $1800 to replace the transfer case. I found a couple of used ones for around $800. It would cost me around $450 to haul the truck to my barn to begin repairs. It is just isn’t worth it. I am getting disappointed in my dodge. Three months ago it was the injector and lift pump and now this.
I am sorry to hear of your delemma. if i was in Texas i would help a brother out.
Maybe one of our great members will volunteer to tow your rig home. Might cost ya a case of beer and fuel.

Oh, I forgot to ask. If you're in Bay City, any chance you're going to the races on the 14th? If you do, stop by the ODRA tent and ask where the DTR guys are. Who knows....we might even have a cold one laying around, if you're so inclined.

I think a Jasper runs $1000-$1200. Maybe somebody local can find a Jasper installer that has or can recommend a tow service to pick it up. It'll probably last longer and have a better warranty that the OEM.
