Truck stopped dead TPS code

I was driving home tonight and suddenly the truck just quit. No warnng at all.

Fuel pressure was 14 at 55 mph, full tank, everything seemed good.

I coasted over tot he side and stopped. I tried to start it but the motor just spun over. I waited about 2 minutes and bumped the starter to make sure the fuel pressure was good. yes 14 psi. So I tried it again and nothing.

I was not far from my son's house so I called and had him bring his scanner.
We found the code for the crqnkshaft position sensor.

So it's not the injector pump as I feared.

This is a new one for me. First where is it???
Second what do I need for tools to change it.??
Third is this a dealer only or and AutoZone part??

We dragged the truck up to my son's house but it will have to be done outside. This is going to be one cold operation as it is already down to 10 degrees and may go lower. bbbrrr.

any help will be appreciated.

I'm doing a search now

thanks

I had the CEL and same sensor code 2 years ago while hunting - the tach quit working, but the truck still ran; This has been intermittent for me, the tach will flicker briefly to indicate the CEL is coming, but I have never had a dead truck from it, and it only lasts for a few seconds (judging by the tach not working then working again), the CEL goes away after a few starts.

I purchased the sensor at the local Cummins shop after the dealer wanted twice as much and needed a week to get it; It is under the back seat now, I keep trying to "get around to it", but never have; As a temporary fix, you might disconnect the sensor and clean the connection to see if it is merely a connection issue...?

The sensor is well hidden behind the starter....

Well I replaced the crankshaft position sensor. Great thread on the proceedure after doing search here. Thanks to whoever may this post.

Now it still won't start. It turns over as well as it ever does.
I have good fuel pressure at 14 psi.
batteries are fully charged...I have a 30 amp charger.
I plugged in the block heater and put a oil pan heater on as it is down to 8 degrees and wndy now.
nearly full fuel tank.
I drained the fuel filer to see if there might be water in the fuel....none
Power service in the tank..always
The grid heaters are working as the intake tube gets warm, probably around 60 degees F
the valve train is moving...Local dealer suggested that a gear in the cam train can break.
I just changed the oil last week end and it right where it was when I put diesel in Fri nite so I haven't fillled the pan with fuel.
We tried to crack the injector lines but the wrench split so I'm going to try again in the morning.

I don't have any codes indicating the injector pump.
there is a 1689 code but the dealer says is is probably the ABS but definitely not a part of the no start problem.
The dealer says that I've pretty well covered the usual problems and he thinks that something broke in the VP-44. He says that mechanical failure will not necessarily show up on codes. Another shop says to check for fuel at the injectors as this will point to the vp-44 or or confirm it is still good.

Has anybody got any other ideas.

I really need something as I'm out of town and only have a day or two of vacation before it start costing me.

Thanks ahead.

We visually checked all of them but today we will pull every one and test them.

We also are going to pull the CKS again and test the plug after instruction from one of the local diesel shop and one of the dealers. The possibility is that there may be an electrical problem other than the sensor.

We will also check to verify that the "tone ring" is still there.

We do have a strong smell of diesel after cranking which is why both the dealer and the service tech said to check this.

The truck is really clean underneath even with our salt baths during the winters. There is very little rust and corrossion. The CKS was hardly dusty when I pulled it out and it was not frozen in the block as some have said.

thanks
