Air in fuel? NO start Now...

Hey guys I got this strange problem, the truck had been running fine, and I got on a backroad and was pushing some crusty snow, and when I got turned around and went home everything was fine, then I went to start it the next afternoon and No start,so I bled the fuel system, had air at IP Banjo and had to bleed the Injectors too...well then it would start but after shutoff it took a little longer than ususal to start, maybe 5 sec of cranking to start, then it ran fine, lotsa power..all that.
Then I stopped at the border, and talked to the Boarder guard for about 1 minute,**** thing barely started(30 secs of cranking,at least)Now I filled the tank last night, and pointed the truck downhill, thinking that the worst that could happen is fuel all over, but It won't start tonight and I don't know what the heck to do,I tryed bleeding it and it still won't start 21psi of fuel pressure to the IP...any help would be appricated
BTW New IP about 30,000 miles back, from midwest FI

About to sell this POS and go buy a chevy, hold me back boys,I'll miss the cummins!

boy you are lucky, my 01' did the same exact thing minus starting back up! I took the hook home tonight. I pulled the fuel line off the ip and hit the key, got a few tiny bubbles but not much really. I had no luck with bleeding the pump and lines.....my guess is $10 worth of fuel line, or $1000 worth of pump. time will tell.

My guess is a slight air leak on the suction line.

Can sombody please post a 24v fuel route diagram.

keep us posted with what you find.

I'm thinking that the problem is in the fuel tank,Pickup tube..I'll keep ya posted,I thought that maybe someone here has had the same problem, and would know how to fix it...but maybe we're on our own.
Never fear,I'll throw money at it till' its fixed

...interesting problem you have, you may have shaken something "loose" in the fuel tank, which is now blocking the pickup, or picked up a hole in the fuel line....

21 psi at the IP, sounds like you're losing prime or gaining air SOMEWHERE....sounds like you'll need to check the fuel lines from the tank to the IP, at that pressure, you should see some indication of spray somewhere along the route, it's pretty straightforward to follow; ASSUMING, of course, that your IP hasn't died

Keep us posted!

Any new spots under truck after sitting overnight. Figure if u have a suction air leak, that it would leak after the pump is off. Also does the FP drop to 0 right after the truck is turned off?

Yeah guys,I would have thought there would be some leaking somewhere too,but nothing so far,and it's raining like a cow peeing on a flat rock here,so I cant see any puddles, but there is no fuel leaking anywhere,I crawed under and checked,I'm thinking that it must be in the tank...The fuel pressure drops after the pumps turn off,but not REAL fast, just about normal.
Other than the tank I am at a loss,of course I filled the sucker thinking that way it would start,so at least I know that it has to be kinda towards the top.
Lotsa foam at the injectors so I know its air..dang thing,IP not leaking anywhere either (SP)
When this rain lets up I'll drop the tank
Thanks Guys!

I'd say its your VP-44. What you can try is putting a check valve or a small shut off valve between the fuel filter and the VP-44, if this cures your problem, its the VP-44. Timinva gave me this tip, it helped me trouble shoot a problem I was having. If you put a shut off valve in the line run the truck, when you shut the truck off close the valve, let it sit for a while, before restart bump the key to start lift pump then open the valve and start the truck. Try it only can cost you a couple $'s. You can also try pinching the line off with a small pair of vicegrips use a piece of hose over the line so you don't ruin it. Thanks Steve B.

A one way valve work you think? I have a couple of 3/8 size ones in the garage.
Thanks, Brian

It would depend on how much pressure is needed on the inlet side. If you can try the vicegrips first to see if it will work for you. From what I understand there is a plate and a diaphram of some type in the VP-44, when one or the other goes bad they let the fuel drain back thus letting air in causing the hard start problem. Thanks Steve B.

Nothing wrong with the tank,it seems likely that the IP is toast again,if it is getting fuel to the IP and won't start...anyone else have some Idea?
Otherwise I'm sending it to a shop and going truck shopping....

I pulled the fuel line from my pusher to the rest of the truck and ran it through some clear tubing....gobbs of bubbles. I filled a 5 gal can with fuel, bypassing the tank and module and bled all the air out of the line up to the vp44, currently waiting on my charger to do it's job so i can row on my starter some more.

still no codes

anyone know how much air it takes to goof up the timing event?

No code here, but I'm confident that its my VP44
I did'nt want to do that again so soon.
My advice,if you have the Juice w/Attitude,don't tap the pump, its got good power without doing that, and my IP would have been warranted...but all my lessons gots to cost at least 1k Melting #6 cost me $3700
If you want to know what not to do...just ask me what I'm doing..

well after tax I am 1100 bux lighter but my truck is running again. if you have trouble finding a pump in lewiston call john at advanced diesel in spokane, he has great prices excellent service and prolly has another vp in stock. he is a bosch builder and builds and tests the pumps in house......good luck!
