Trouble with 4 wheel drive

I am having problems with my 4 wheel drive

When I shift the lever into 4 wheel drive it takes a good amount of time to go into 4x4, the lite on the dash flickers on and off, and then goes into 4x4
When the lite is off, it is in 2 wheel drive.

When you move lever from 4x4 to 2 wheel drive it is done quickly.

I'd check the vacuum lines going to the transfer case and front axle. It's possible you have a minor leak in one of the lines that engages 4WD that causes the front axle to not positively engage right away.

I find that it I go into 4wd while driving, it may take a little while to engage but if I let off of gas and coast, it engages right away. I think the reason is, the collar pushes against the splines just a tad while the axle is being rolled and once the axle is decelerating, the splines must align better. Disengaging takes a bit on mine too and if the axle is under load (like parked on an incline), it will only disengage after it rolls and the load is off the axle.

I would also look at your vaccum lines to make sure there is no leak.

Ditto - check the vacuum lines & solenoid.
