Transmission removal tips
Transmission removal tips
Blew up something at the truck show today, I think input shaft, but anyways I am looking for tips on pulling the tranny out. Do I drop the tcase with it? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Josh

Jambii,
I dropped mine with the case on my 96 3500. I had a tranny jack though. It was pretty easy, didn't even jack the truck up. Without a tranny jack I think you probably will have an easier time if you split them.

With 9" of lift you can probably stand under there to do it.
Good Luck

Converter bolts
Jambi, there are two 10mm bolts that hold a plate on you have to work through this hole, its on the side where your cooler is next to the plug you remove to put your barring tool in. Thanks Steve B.
The hammer might be for the crossmember. I used a hydraulic ram to spread the frame. The pesky crossmember just fell in my hands then. Remove the tranny and converter as one piece. Do the same when you install it. Otherwise the seal between the two will get damaged. Ask me how I know.

you definitely want to pull the t case off separately, its a lot easier to handle. Also, keep the area under the truck clean and as dry as possible! It only makes it worse to swim in ATF when you're trying to fight a tranny....
Just find a tranny jack adaptor that goes into a regular 2 1/2 floor jack. You should have enoiugh clearance to wheel the tranny out on the jack, with my truck on 315s I needed another 3" or so to wheel the tranny out from under it. It can be a one man job if it needs to be, but it takes a lot longer. Also, make it easy on yourself by taking out all the easy to get to bellhousing bolts, then support the tranny with the jack, take the crossmember out and then lower the tranny a bit to get to the bolt on the top of the bellhousing. Other than that it is a pretty straightforward time, it just gets old after you do it for the 3rd time!

I have the aftermarket crossmemeber with the lift I have so that shouldnt be a problem. Do I need to support the engine in anyway after removing the transmission?

Also , while we are on the topic of transmissions . What does it sound like I broke. It seems like my truck is in neutral the whole time. Doesnt the output shaft have the parking paw on it? Has anyone broken an output shaft?
Thanks
Thanks
Yeah, you'll want to support the rear of the motor, I just used a bottle jack and a 2x6. As far as what you broke, how did it happen? was it shifting when it let loose? If I remember right, when I had mine out the parking paw goes way back into the overdrive housing.
need to take tranny out
Hi, I came across this after a search.
Some questions,
If you take out the transfer case do you need to unhook the front and rear drive axle?
Or can they stay in place. How much travel do you need to slide the trans out?
Thanks,
Raf

You will need to remove the rear drive line completely, since it slides out of the TC. The front drive line can just be unbolted from the flange on the TC, and stay connected to the front axle. It is tight top to bottom but it should slide out OK.
