transmission knockin

im in sf bay area and it looks like my transmission will not be here this weekend. does anybody know where i can get a NV4500 transmission for at least $800. its all i got and im in school and my cougar is unreliable. please anything will help. thank you

Had a similar noise with an old Chevy. Turned out the flywheel to crankshaft bolts had started to back out. Something to check while you are in there.

got the new transmission today and put it in today. i took off the pto gear plate and crap! 3rd gear, ouch! 10 teeth damaged 8 teeth broke off that's just 3rd gear. i will know more when i go to rebuild the transmission sometime this week, i hope. thank you everybody for your help. if i find more damage i will post it.

Looks like 3rd gear is the real weak point in this tranny. My tech Nick went through his in less than a year. Ouch!

one more question to ask what is the difference between a vin code "6" transmission and vin code "C" transmission?

If you are referring to the 8th position of the VIN, it isn't a transmission code but an engine code. If so, the 6 refers to the 5.9L CTD whereas the C refers to the 5.9L CTD HO.

2003 Vin code C with a manual is the 6 speed NV5600
