Re:transfer pump???
the best way to check it is to get fuel pressure gauge and check the pressure. You can also listen for it to buzz but that doesnt mean it is working to its maxium requirements. The one on my 01 lasted to 95k. It is the pump under the fuel filter and it supplies the vp-44 pump without it your injection pump will die

Look right down and behind your fuel canister - there it is. I am on my 3rd LP. they are extremely easy to replace and covered the 100,000 miles warranty. If you are over your warranty - just unbolt your fuel canister and move it over - and simply take the old one off. Its really easy.

PSI at idle should be 14 psi. It will drop as you increase your rpm. If you change your fuel filter and have a hard time priming and starting the truck back up - your LP is probobly bad. I also noticed on mine the last time it went out there was a slight sluggish feeling at highway speeds.

If you need one, get it at your local Cummins dealer. Its a lot cheaper.
Re:transfer pump???
thank you all for the info. I did have the truck at a dealership when I asked about it. it is still covered under warranty for now so hopefully this won't be a problem again, any views on this? will this probably go bad again? My first Dodge was a '92 3/4 ton 5 spd. I had that truck for 7 years and the only thing I EVER had to fix (or replace) was the clutch. never had a problem with anything else (except speedometer quit working and I never got that fixed) so this newer truck will take some getting used to!
Re:transfer pump???
Yes, it is possible that you will continue to have problems, although there's no predicting if or when. Some people have had them replaced 3 times before 20K and some people have run them out of warranty without a single problem. More the former than the latter, I suspect. See the threads about lift pumps and pucher pumps in the Aftermarket forum.

Chris

Yes what everyone said above. Best insurance is to have a pressure gauge, either in the cab or at least a test gauge. Then you can watch the psi and have warning when it is starting to fade away. Pressures should be:idle-14-15psi, cruising empty 10-11psi, and wot not below 8psi. Keeping good fuel flow will allow you vp44 to live long and happy. With out good fuel flow it will die a long and miserable death.
IMHO you have to watch fuel pressure as most trucks will run just fine with almost no pressure.
my $.02
wk
