Tranny problem. Not sure what to do

My truck has 112K miles and I changed the fluid and filter yesterday. My magnet in my oil pan had a good bit of metal on it and the fluid was dark. I also adjusted the front and rear bands per the haynes manual. Now everything is fine except in second gear it jerks and jumps around. It seems like it is reving itself up. It also slips going from second to third some. I was told by a friend i need a TC. Is that my only problem or do I have bigger issues?

What was it doing before you changed the fluid and adjusted the bands?

Last summer, my 98.5 Cummins was having similiar tranny problems. When accelerating from 40-60, it would shift gears; it would almost hesitate when it shifted, then it would rev a little higher, hesitate and finally kick in to gear. It almost felt like it was feathering down in to gear, with a little bit of a shimmy when it shifted. I replaced the TC with a heavy duty one, ran me about $690 bucks and I installed it. Haven't had one tranny problem since. I have put about 12k miles on it since, I have 109k now.

i have heard a few times that the Haynes manual makes the bands too tight? can anyone else confirm deny this? Also have you checked your fluid lvl again, I know mine will go down a tad, 2k miles after changing the fluid.

If the magnet had a "good bit of metal " is real metal and not just the normal what i would call a fine fir like substance then you add in your slippage i would say you have a hard parts failure in progress for which you will need to pull it and repair it . The dark fluid was most likely caused by the slippage and heat from it.

Your adjustment of KD band may be wrong. ??? How many threads were still visible on band adjustment bolt when completed. If no threads protuded beyond jamb nut, the band is WORN OUT.
In any case it sounds like most all the life has been gotten from current tranny.
