I probably should be embarassed to admit this, but last year on a biz trip I drove my ailing '98 w/47RE from Dallas to San Francisco to buy a full-tilt 49RE from APS Precision. I'd neglected to start changing the tranny fluid/filter 'til @ 175K miles on a 10K # service truck, so by the time I was ready for a better tranny at 220K miles, the clutches were fried & there was parts welded together inside... but it always kept rollin! Breakaway & 2nd were real slick, but Drive & OD kept savin' my bacon.

I hope nobody finds out I work on this stuff for a living

Don't forget to clean the ground connection at the under side of the engine block. This was the culprit when mine started searching for gears at 45 mph.

As the previous post state.......Make sure your grounds are 100% especially the one coming off of the PCM. About once a year mine will start acting up, clean the grounds and just like magic the "hunting" dis appears!

I own a '98 2500 4x4 cummins and mine acts the same. "If I am Going down the road it acts as if it wants to go into O.D or another gear. The RPMS go up and down, up and down and you can feel it doing all of this. Just as you explained, like it's confused on what it wants to do".
