So it seems the torque convertor is locking up in instantly when i put it in drive. the only way to get it in first gear is to place it there using the column selector then shift to 2nd then to Drive where is seems to lock up instantally. What could cause this? I'm out of town for work now andwas wondering if there's some kinda check or widget that mught fix this till i get back home.

you won't like this. Sounds like the converter came apart inside. I had a jeep that did that last week.
