Too much smoke
Too much smoke
I'm not on the side of the road yet.........and I don't want to be in the morning.
The truck ran great yesterday. Today, it has a loss of power and acceleration and is blowing a lot of black smoke when accelerating.
What I've done so far:
* Checked the Lp and all pressures are good.
* Disconnected both batteries and will reset the throttle control in about 15 min.
* Moved the EZ from the 3 hole to the 1 hole.
What else might be causing the black smoke and power loss?

Check all your intercooler boots.
One or more could have slid a little, or gotten a little hole in it.
There's one that's pretty close to something and can get a hole rubbed in it over time.
Can't remember which one though, but should be obvious looking at it.

Smoke and Loss of Power
Crobtex:
Check your intercooler boots and intake flange for leaks. This happened to me once out in the middle of nowhere Texas and that was the problem. Lots of Smoke and could only get it up to about 50 mph after a long struggle to make it to the closest town.

You have 4 of them - the rubber hose sections with clamps on your air piping. One between the turbo compressor discharge and pipe. Second between the pipe and intercooler inlet (low on the passenger's side.) Third is the one I described above. Fourth is between the pipe and the intake air housing where the compressed air enters the intake manifold.

I'll also check the intercooler boots as soon as someone tells me what they
are.

then from that thingy to the intake horn on the engine.
There'll be a hose clamp on each end, check those for tightness as well as making sure the boots are completly on the turbo, intercooler, and intake horn.

Intercooler Boots
Crobtex:
The intercooler boots connect the ridgid pieces running from the turbo into the intercooler on the passengers side (located in front of the radiator) and out of the intercooler into the intake on the drivers side of the engine. The boot that is prone to getting a hole rubbed in it is the lower boot on the passengers side where the turbo connects to the intercooler.

Each time the tube makes a bend or meets another tube, it is connected by a rubber boot.
The boots are held on with large hose clamps.
These clamps can work lose and one boot comes very close to the body panel. This can cause a small hole in the rubber boot that is very difficult to detect.
Check the clamps for tightness and inspect the boots for any sign of rubbing or cracking.
Rich.

OK.......have done all of the above, including air filter, which was nearly new. Can't test drive right now, but will in a bit and let you know................
Thanks,
Thanks,
Well, I took it around the block. No smoke, and it ran as well as can be expected without the EZ. I moved the EZ to the 2 hole and will try it later tonight or in the morning.
I don't know what it was, but thanks to all for your help.
