stalling? In an auto?

As some of you may have read, I just bought this 94 12v diesel yesterday, never owned one before. It seems to run ok, But I was just goofing, and reving the engine, after it warmed up, and I tapped the gas on then off quickly, less then half second, and it stalled. While it was in park. Then when I was driving, I slowed to a stop, to do a U turn, and it stalled on me, then in reverse, as I was about to put it into drive, and it stalled on me again. It fires up nicely, for the first 10 seconds or so, it is rough, but after that, its good. Any Ideas?

I would bet the idle is too low. Spec is for 750 rpm in gear with a/c engaged.

It needs to be more like 750-800 rpm

Thanks man!!! I did that, and it works great now... Idles at 1000 in park, and 800-850 in drive with A/C on... do you by any chance no how to adjust the fuel pump for the added power? Or the timing?

Start by reading the forums relating to your truck- there's a few things you need to have and lots you should know before playing in there and almost everything you could want to know has already been answered.

On your 94 I would check the timing. The idle on the mechanical diesels will not drop unless it is adjusted down, or the timing slips.

The nut on the injection pump drive was not properly torqued at the factory, and all the 94-98 models will slip timing until they are retimed and the nut is properly torqued.

The other thing to check on the 94 is the overflow valve, it was a single assembly back then and failed frequently. The revised two piece replacement overflow valves generally outlast the owners. When the overflow valve starts to fail the headpressure internal to the pump drops and then the idle starts to degrade.

So now that I have adjusted the Idle myself, if I do the timing right away, the idle will be way high then eh?

Not necessarily.
It's probably more common for the idle to self adjust itself lower by the linkage hammering against the adjustment screw a wearing a groove than it is for it to change due to slipped timing.
