Question Speedometer recalibration

I know that this topic has been discussed before, but this is a little different question, and hopefully someone can answer it.

I finally got some alloy wheels from a 2001 and installed them on my 1998 12V. I purchased 4 new Michelin 265/75-R16 tires and went to the dealer to have my speedometer recalibrated. I called the dealer before doing all this to be sure that they could do it. I originally had 245/75-R16's. The service manager glady offered to do it at no cost. I went down, and he plugged into the diagnostic port and scrolled down to the anti-lock section, and when the scanner went to retrieve the information, it said that it was unable to verify VIN information........ He ran some other test, and it could read the VIN and it matched the one on the VIN tag, and door jam. I was not able to read everything on the scanner while I looking over his shoulder, but I did notice that the date code for something stated DEC 98, and my truck was mfg. in Nov. 97. I questioned that, and the service guy said he had never seen this before. He went to another 98 in the shop, and plugged into it, and was able to change the tire size. He did say that the anti-lock sensor may have been replaced, but still did not understand why it would not retrieve the information.

I would rather not have to put a ratio correction device on, like the Superlift, unless absolutely necessary. I used my GPS to verify that the speedometer is off.

Thanks for the help.

I'm pretty sure, on a 12 valve engine, you have to change the speedometer gear.

Tech that tried to use the DRB doesn't know what he is doing.

The Superlift Truespeed wouldn't work either.

I was told that if the odometer is a digital one, than the speedo can be calibrated with the DRB. He was able to do a different 98 12V.
Why do you think he doesn't know what he is doing? He seemed to be pretty competent to me.

Why won't the Superlift work? According to the information on Superlifts website, it will work on Dodges 1500/2500/3500 from 1992-2001 2WD and 4WD.

Thanks,
Darrin

I was just under the assumption that all 12 valve Cummins equipped Dodge trucks had to recalibrate the speedometer and odometer with the gear instead of electronically.

I have been wrong before, so I'm sure there is a possibility I am at this time as well.

Just checked out the Superlift site and it does say it will work on most vehicles with an electronic speedometer nothing about an electronic odometer

The part that says 92-01 is obviously incorrect, as I have one on my 2002 Dodge 2500.

There is also a section that says "non cable driven" speedometer, which I was pretty sure the 1998 12 valve trucks had.

Phox,
Thanks for the input. The speedometer on my truck is definitely not cable driven, so maybe I need to do a little more research and see what I come up with as far as being able to recalibrate it with the DRB, or using the Superlift Truspeed. I will post the results of what I find.

Thanks,
Darrin

Be carefull using your GPS to verify speed, as there is a built in error in the system that keeps the satalites hidden from BinLaden and friends. Unless you are close to a correction tower you could be out by as much as 5 mph.
