shift lever in cab

afternoon all,
I just changed oil, jumped in truck, started truck no problem. I went to shift out of park into gear, no problem, when I went to put into park, it would not go. So I shut it down in neutral, and after messing with it it went into park, now the ignition will not turn in park, only if I pull shift lever towards me which allows it to go to neutral, then it will start. What happened? It ran great yesterday, then bam.. I guess it did not the oil change..Any help or suggestions would br greatly appreciated.

update

well I readjusted all the linkage as per book, but could not get the lever on the transmission in the park position. After about two hours of laying in the snow and ice, I gave up, limped to a trans shop. They just called and said they had to drop Valve body. Any info on what may have happened in there? Should I be looking for parts on my own? I hate not being able to do my own work, just is hard working in the snow in a parking lot.

I hear you on the laying in the snow part of things, no fun! If they dropped the valve body, they might be looking to see if the parking paw is dislodged somehow in there. Basically the parking paw is attatched at one end in the valve body, and the paw end goes back to the overdrive section of the tranny (if I remember right). I guess I don't really know how it would bed dislodged, but it may also be possible to shear it off. I've never heard of one shearing, but I guess it could happen.

final update

Well the trans shop dropped the valve body, and found the pawl laying there. so they reassembled it, but said that everything looked good, but that the foward plate was about as thick as a buisness card. So I asked what they recommend, whether I should be buying a tranny or what to do. they recommended that they would build my transmission however I wanted it, so I wanted to ask here what to do, have them do it, or buy one from a repitable dealer?
