scan tool shut down?????

scan tool shut down?????

i have a 98 dodge ram 24v with the edge attitude in it.i took to a mechanic the other day the tranny overheating.he tried to hook up his scanner to it.it said something about the pcm(no specific code)and then he tried to go into the data link page and it would allow him to do so he then disconnected the edgeand it did the same thing.what would be causing this to happen.he mentioned it could be a bad pcm.any help would be great thanks k

saw several 98's do that with aftermarket scanners ( snap on , ect. ) . Don't know why! I used a DRB on them ( factory tool ) and it worked fine.

The scan tool shut down on mine the second time we tried it after the initial scan. The Snap-on worked ok I think at least it read the same codes the first one read. However after replacing the IP all the functions worked fine on the original scanner. It said something about no communication with fuel pump ecm then quit.
