running strange
2002 24v running strange. every once ina while it will act like it isn't getting enough fuel or something, or like it is cold. I checked the codes and it came up with: p pcu, p 1693, p ecu, p0216. can anyone help ???

Check fuel suppy if OK replace injection pump. Min fuel flow 45oz in 25 seconds. Replace fuel filter and check for contamination.

The P1693 is telling you that there is a diagnostic trouble code in either the ECM or the PCM. The trouble code is the P0216, Injection Pump Timing Failure, and that can be associated with a host of problems ranging from a failing Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor to a failing pump, to loose or corroded connector terminals for the injection pump.
The P0216 generally occurs if the APPS is dirty and providing a reading that is outside what the pump processor is looking for, and then the pump timing error is produced. My recommendation is to do the reset procedure for the APPS, and see if the problem disappears. If it does, then reappears in a few days it is time to either attempt to clean (if you can) or replace the APPS.
Sometimes the APPS will set a DTC that directly references that it is failing, but not if it is still providing the proper "at rest" impedance. It will trick the pump into the timing error code if the at rest impedance is good, and the operating range impedance is incorrect.
If the P0216 code does not reset, then it is likely the VP44 is due for replacement. When you do the replacement get a quality rebuilt pump, not a cheapy, or you will be back here sooner than you wish. Look for a fully reconditioned housing with the liner for the timing shuttle and the bypass diaphragm replaced, as well as a new computer in the pump. Do not accept anything else! A lot of sloppy rebuilt pumps are out there waiting for customers.

what is APPS? Sorry, I'm really behind the curve on the lingo. I've had my truck for 4 years and never really had any trouble, it only has 69000 mi. on it and essentially no mods. I really appreciate the help.

first start with the basics like replace fuel filter, clean connections, etc. Do you have the stock lift pump or aftermarket ?
try resetting the APPS here is how. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...n&onlynewfaq=1

Chances are it quit awhile back. Do the fuel flow test like bigiron70 says. Take off a rubber hose on the outlet from the pump and attach a longer one into a container. Then bump the starter, (engage the starter but do not start engine) the LP should run for 25 seconds. Measure the fuel if not enough change the filter and retry if still not enough replace LP bleed and restart after clearing codes. See if the codes come back if so then it could be the APPS but chances are it's the VP if you get the 216 again.

ok, I did the flow test, looks ok, filled a 44 oz cup in about 20 or so secs. Then I did the APPS reset procedure. Went to a local auto parts store and had them clear the codes. Drove home (about 5 mi.) and it seemed fine. I stopped to B.S. with a buddy, when I left his house I gave it the onion and got the dead pedal....time for a new vp?? when I got home I checked for codes and got the exact same ones.

The APPS on these trucks are not that good and the dealer wants a fortune for a replacement. There is a guy on here that has another solution that just plugs right in for a fraction of the cost. Many have installed his version and I think all have had no problems. If you search for "Timbo apps" you should find him. If it's not your APPS it's not far off so I would throw one of his in before replacing the VP. My 2 cents worth.
