Retrieving and Deciephering Codes Without Reader on 2006 HO?

Hey folks. I know, I know .... the village idiot has woke up. But I do have a serious question you've probably heard a thousand times from us Newbies. Is it possible to retrieve and decipher the check engine codes on a 2006 HO without a code tool? I've got a copy of the 2006 Tech manual but it assumes you have a way to get the code and read it. On some of my other trucks, I've been able to on/off/on..etc to get the light to flash the codes.

I got a check engine light tonight (<5k miles). I set in my spare fuel filter I carry and dropped the battery leads to reset the computer, but no dice. Thanks in advance for your time.

Place the key in the ignition.
Turn key to the run position, (not start)
Turn key off,
Turn key on,
Turn key off,
Turn key on.
Codes should appear in the speedometer read out.

Codes

Is there any place that I can find a list of what the different codes are? I got a P2509 on my new 06' this morning?

Jeez Louise, if ya can afford $35 grand for a truck, spring $170 for a Scan Gauge. Mine has taken permanent residency on my dash. See my sig.And for a list of codes, go to the Smarty website and check out the owners manual, Its got them all in there. I would say print out the manual and keep the list of codes in the glove come-apart-ment.

Also check Harbor Freight as they have an OBDII complieant with can bus reader and I bought mine on sale for $39. It also erases codes. Comes with a book listing most codes and manufacturer specific codes. Well worth the price to me as I'm not wrenching anymore and can't afford the expensive one.

Thanks for the information. It always amazes me that you can find this information on the internet, but the dealer's don't know it (or say they don't).
